CABARET TONIGHT IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA

CABARET TONIGHT IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA

MARYLAND: THE NEW WEST GUITAR GROUP AT BETHESDA BLUES

The New West Guitar Group, featuring Jeff Stein, John Storie and Perry Smith will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Thursday, October 10th at 7:30 pm. New West has been making their mark as a fresh, cutting-edge guitar ensemble. Performing popular covers and original music, New West combines the acoustic and electric guitar to create their signature sound. Based in Los Angeles and New York, NW tours extensively throughout the United States giving concerts and masterclasses. The group infuses its latest disc "Big City" with its signature blend of laid-back virtuosity and expert arrangements. Firmly rooted in classic jazz, the trio's versatility as both players and composers has given them a reputation as pioneers in the realm of guitar ensemble repertoire. There is a $10 cover.

D.C.: ROY HARGROVE AT BLUES ALLEY

Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove will perform at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday through Sunday, October 8th through 13th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. The Dallas born trumpeter has never been short of hipness. Mentored as a teenager by Wynton Marsalis, he has a flaring tone and a lyrical warmth; his fusing of traditional and contemporary music turns his gigs into exuberant jazz history lessons. With a band including the excellent New Orleans-born pianist Sullivan Fortner, and formidable young drummer Quincy Phillips, Hargrove's snappy phrase turns and vibrato-laden long notes, pared with alto saxist Justin Robinson's fluent improvisations, embellish his usual selection of swingers and Latin shuffles. Call for cover/minimum information.
