BOSTON: STANLEY SAGOV & THE REMEMBERING THE FUTURE JAZZ BAND

An Evening with Stanley Sagov & The Remembering The Future Jazz Band, with Special Guest jazz/rock guitarist Larry Coryell will be presented at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Saturday, September 6th at 7:30 pm. Stanley Sagov is a dazzling jazz pianist and composer who is skilled on a number of musical instruments. Sagov also commands a full time career as a medical doctor, amazing his colleagues in both music and in medicine with his ability to lead such an intense dual life both as a physician and as a musician. Sagov's Band is thrilled to be re-joined for another evening at the RegattaBar with one of the pioneers of jazz-rock - perhaps the pioneer in the ears of some - Special Guest Larry Coryell. Coryell deserves a special place in the history books. He brought what amounted to a nearly alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s, a hard-edged, cutting tone, phrasing and note-bending that owed as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smoother bop influences. Other members of the band are Wanetta Jackson on vocals, Robert Douglas Gay on alto sax, Bob Gullotti on drums, and John Lockwood on bass. There is a $30 cover.

TORONTO: THE ANDREW CRAIG QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO

Celebrated vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, director and broadcaster Andrew Craig debuts a new musical sound with his all-star quartet at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, September 3rd through 6th at 9:00 pm. Craig has long searched for the nexus point between jazz, blues, R & B, funk, Gospel and music of the African continent. His latest songs come closest to reaching that nexus point, and he is excited to debut them in public for the first time. Craig is thrilled to be supported by a world-class trio of musicians: Paa Joe - guitar, Rich Brown - bass and Altaf Vellani - drums and percussion. Andrew Craig creates and performs original music, directs orchestras and musical productions, produces albums, radio, and television, and composes for theatre. He's worked with artists such as Molly Johnson, Wynton Marsalis, Measha Bruggergosman and Kellylee Evans, opened for Bobby McFerrin, directed tributes to Oscar Peterson and Quincy Jones, and performed twice for Nelson Mandela. There is a $12-$15 cover.

TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: KRISTIAN PODLACHA

Kristian Podlacha will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299 - ) on Thursday through Saturday, September 4th, 5th & 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. Born into a musical family, Kristian started studying piano at 7 and was writing classically by 8. Early exposure to Oscar Peterson and Django Reinhardt caused him to fall deeply in love with jazz, a style of music that has shaped his life. Since then, he has explored and performed swing, French jazz manouche, contemporary jazz, and classical music. The result is a highly personal sound blending the harmony of French impressionists Ravel and Debussy with the passion of jazz manouche; all placed within the sophistication of modern jazz. He is currently studying piano at the University of Toronto with scholarship. There is no cover.

NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

A frequent collaborator with such notables as Steve Coleman, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane and Fred Hersch, Alessi has also recorded seven albums as a leader including the critically acclaimed "Baida" (Quartet) on ECM Records. As an educator, Alessi has been a member of the faculty of the Eastman School of Music and is currently the founder and director of the School for Improvisational Music. Ever since his breakthrough in the early 1970s as a founding member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and as a drummer/leader whose recordings (such as Spectrum) and powerful, complex style of play exerted a strong influence on the course of jazz and jazz-fusion-Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musical explorer. In 2014, Cobham will release a live CD recording from last years' celebrated Spectrum 40 tours, which dazzled audiences around the world in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Spectrum CD, the defining album of the jazz-fusion genre. The Nighthawks had its genesis when lead singer-harmonica player extraordinaire Mark Wenner returned to his native Washington, D.C., after six years in New York City, lured back by the success of his friend Bobby Radcliff's local acclaim with a blues band. Mark joined forces with a very young Jimmy Thackery and formed The Nighthawks in 1972. In 1974, they decided to get the best rhythm section the area had to offer: Jan Zukowski on bass and Pete Ragusa on drums. The Nighthawks set off on a tour that took them to 49 states and a dozen countries. They played with nearly all the living blues legends as well as a new generation of bands sometimes called "the Blue Wave," and released several important albums, including the best-selling Jacks and Kings with Pinetop Perkins, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson, Calvin Jones and Bob Margolin.
