THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) will attempt to achieve a Guinness World Record by presenting a 3-day, 60 hour, marathon Variety Show running from Thursday, January 1st (New Year's Day) at 7:00 pm through Sunday, January 4th at 7:00 am. The marathon, which is eligible to become a Guinness World Records record-holder for longest variety show ever, will feature up to 100 Metropolitan Room artists, from its most prominent stars to its most promising emerging talents. On two nights of the event, Friday & Saturday, January 2nd & 3rd, Marilyn Maye will perform a full hour show at 7:00 pm. (Separate ticket purchase necessary).

WASHINGTON, DC: ARTURO SANDOVAL AT BLUES ALLEY

Latin jazz legend Arturo Sandoval will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, December 4th through 7th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Miami, Florida home. A protege of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn't take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the World's most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. Sandoval is fluent in at least four musical languages. He can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and sooth you with a luscious ballad; with equal power and grace. There is a $45 cover.

Powerhouse singer Avery Sommers is returning to THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL (155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) for her seventh engagement since making her Royal Room debut in August 2008. Pianist Robi Botos performs at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Saturday, December 6th at 9:00 pm. Born into a musical family in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, the mainly self-taught Robi Botos began his musical career when he was just a child, growing up in Budapest, playing drums, and percussion with his father and two brothers. It was at age seven when Robi first took up piano, the instrument he has since mastered and with which he has made his mark. Robi's notable performances include: Concert at the Long Beach convention and entertainment centre. Opening concert for Bela Fleck, Stanley Clark, and Jean Luc Ponty, at the 2005 International Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival on the main stage. As well in the same year Robi opened for Oscar Peterson at the prestigious Stravinsky hall in Montreaux Switzerland. Since immigrating to Canada in 1998, Robi has made great contributions to Canada's jazz scene. NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, September 9th, 20th & 27th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The year 2013 has been a banner one for Pat Metheny. After being awarded his 20th Grammy, for Unity Band, and the release of his critically acclaimed recording of Tap: John Zorn's Book of Angels, Vol. 20, Metheny received word that the readers of DownBeat magazine had voted to induct him into its Hall of Fame. Not only is Metheny the youngest member, but he is also only the fourth jazz guitarist to be chosen for that honor, joining Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, and Wes Montgomery. Lyric soprano Lina Orfanos & her Jazz Quartet will perform at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) on Saturday, December 6th at 7:00 pm. Orfanos was born in New York City and grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. She is an international star who sings in various languages: English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Spanish, and Turkish. She sings in classical, contemporary and jazz styles. In September 2013, Lina released her first Spanish CD - Ay Amor. She has two critically acclaimed Greek recordings Songs for Romantics and Realists and Enchanted Night. She has toured throughout the United States and Greece, and has performed in Israel and Spain. Her shows range from tributes to the Broadway songbook, Ella Fitzgerald, and the legendary Greek composers like Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis. In Greece, Lina is a regular guest star with the orchestra of Mikis Theodorakis. Recently, composer Dimitris Maramis created Spanish songs specifically with her voice in mind. The song cycle Ay Amor bridges the Mediterranean with Latin America and highlights Lina's lyricism, passion and musicality. Lina's Jazz Quartet consists of Essiet Essiet, bass, Spiros Exaras, guitar & arrangements, Richie Morales, drums, and Gary Schreiner on piano, accordion & harmonica. THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) will attempt to achieve a Guinness World Record by presenting a 3-day, 60 hour, marathon Variety Show running from Thursday, January 1st (New Year's Day) at 7:00 pm through Sunday, January 4th at 7:00 am. The marathon, which is eligible to become a Guinness World Records record-holder for longest variety show ever, will feature up to 100 Metropolitan Room artists, from its most prominent stars to its most promising emerging talents. On two nights of the event, Friday & Saturday, January 2nd & 3rd, Marilyn Maye will perform a full hour show at 7:00 pm. (Separate ticket purchase necessary).

Stearns Matthews, three-time MAC Award nominee,celebrates the release of his debut album at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Saturday, December 6th at 4:30 pm. Stearns has appeared twice at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Annual Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and was the first-ever first runner-up in the Metropolitan Room's MetroStar Talent Challenge in 2008. After raising $17,000 in a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2013, Stearns has been hard at work with musical director Christopher Denny and producer Paul Rolnick on producing his debut album. The show will feature some of the songs from the album as well as a few tunes that didn't make the cut due to time constraints. Consider this the "Special Features" section on the DVD: bits from the cutting room floor, commentary from the artist, and an all-around good time. Theatre composers Stephen Schwartz, Richard Rodgers, and Harold Arlen will all be represented, as well as some from the popular end of the spectrum, like Roger Miller, Burt Bacharach, and Don Gibson. Crafted together with Christopher Denny, the arrangements are at times lush and romantic, at others rousing and exhilarating. Lennie Watts directs. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

LONDON: LORNA LUFT AT THE CRAZY COQS

Lorna Luft starts off the festive season at THE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) once again this year with her brand new Christmas show "Accentuate The Positive." Musical Director is Colin R. Freeman. Performances are Tuesdays through Saturday, December 2nd through 13th at 8:00 pm. Lorna sings many beloved standards, such as Any Place I Hang My Hat is Home, Come Rain Or Come Shine, and Jamboree Jones, and in a special section, Lorna will pay tribute to Johnny Mercer, (dubbed "America's poet"), a close family friend. Mercer, who won 4 Academy Awards, also wrote the lyrics to Judy Garland's television theme song. The song became "Lorna", which Judy Garland sang to her daughter on her television show. Lorna has had starring roles in both television and film and has enjoyed numerous successes on the stage across the globe, including Broadway and the West End. She starred in the blockbuster UK premiere production of Irving Berlin's White Christmas: The Musical, reprised the same role on the first national tour, and at the Papermill Playhouse. Concurrent with her theatrical career, Lorna is a gifted live performer frequently featured as a concert artist at the world's most prestigious venues including The Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, The London Palladium, and L'Olympia in Paris to name just a few. Her highly acclaimed multi-media production Songs My Mother Taught Me - The Judy Garland Songbook, melds one of the world's most familiar songbooks with personal memories of a loving daughter. Songs My Mother Taught Me, which Variety called "a rousing, dramatically riveting musical event," was awarded two Los Angeles Theatre Alliance Ovation Awards (Best World Premiere Musical & Best Musical Direction).
