MANHATTAN: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, June 14th, 21st & 28th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

John Pizzarelli, the world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer, and The Swing Seven will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, July 22nd through 26th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Son of the legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, New Jersey native John Pizzarelli has become one of the most recognizable faces and voices in contemporary jazz. John Pizzarelli has had a multi-faceted career as a jazz guitarist, vocalist and bandleader, known around the world for the cool jazz flavor he brings to classic standards, late-night ballads, and each of his hugely entertaining live performances and masterful recordings. His most recent CD release, Rockin' In Rhythm, combines the enduring work of Duke Ellington with Pizzarelli's incredible ability to reinterpret the Great American Songbook. Rockin' In Rhythm is the follow up to Pizzarelli's critically-acclaimed 2008 release, With A Song In My Heart - John Pizzarelli Sings the Music of Richard Rodgers, which featured Don Sebesky's Grammy-nominated arrangement of "Johnny One Note." With his active touring schedule, Pizzarelli continues to charm audiences with his warmth, conversational humor, and musical moxie. There is a $45 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE WALLACE RONEY QUINTET AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Wallace Roney Quintet featuring Lenny White & Buster Williams will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, July 24th through 27th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. He has been an integral part of the band with Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Jay McShann, David Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few. He was one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters. But his most important and meaningful relationship was with Miles Davis. Wallace was mentored by Miles Davis after Miles heard him in 1983 at his birthday gala performance in Carnegie Hall. Their association peaked when Miles chose Wallace to share the stage at his historic performance in Montreux in 1991. After Davis died, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams and Roney banded together and toured the world in tribute. There is a $20-$35 cover.

BOSTON: ROOMFUL OF BLUES AT THE REGATTABAR

In celebration of their 45th anniversary, Roomful of Blues, the jumping, swinging, rocking, award-winning band, will release their new live CD, 45 Live, on Tuesday, July 30th. In advance selebration, they will appear at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday, July 25th at 7:30 & 10:00 pm. For the recording, the band hosted a three-day party in March of 2013 at one of their favorite haunts, The Ocean Mist, in Matunuck, Rhode Island. They packed the club to capacity, playing to roaring ovations each night. The resulting album, 45 Live , is among Roomful of Blues' crowning achievements. The album is a lightning-in-a-bottle blowout, showcasing the larger-than-life vocal and instrumental power of the band. At 45-years-old, New England's Roomful of Blues has been around even longer than its own record lable, Alligator Records. For all that time, they've celebrated the jump blues, R&B and early rock 'n' roll music of the horn-powered golden era of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Roomful don't simply recreate the famous and obscure 78s and 45s of those years. Inspired by the spirit of the groundbreaking bands of the post-World War II decade, they've breathed new life into vintage songs, infusing them with boundless energy and fiery, swinging solos and vocals. For the last two decades, Roomful has been led by Chris Vachon, one of the most underrated guitarists in the blues. For 40 years, their hard-charging horn section has been sparked by Rich Lataille on tenor and alto sax. Energizing the band on Hook, Line & Sinker is their terrific new vocalist, Phil Pemberton. There is a $25 cover.
