This year marks the 30th anniversary of the L.A. JAZZ SOCIETY - be aware their website is slightly out of date). On Sunday, May 5th the L.A. Jazz Society will officially kick off the celebration with a cocktail party and viewing of the newly restored jazz mural on the side of the iconic Capitol Records building in Hollywood. It was Jazz Society founder, Teri Merrill-Aarons who originally commissioned the mural created by artist Richard Wyatt in 1990. Wyatt and his artists will attend the party at THE LEXINGTON SOCIAL HOUSE RESTAURANT (1718 Vine Street, Hollywood, CA - 323-461-1700 - ). The restaurant is located across the street from Capitol Records. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and arguably the most famous Hammond B3 player in history Booker T. Jones will perform at YOSHI'S(1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Saturday, May 4th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. As leader of the legendary Booker T and the MG's, this pillar of soul music collaborated with Otis Redding, Albert King, Eddie Floyd and Sam and Dave during his tenure at the renowned Stax Records label. Since then, Booker has lent his trademark keyboard chops to artists as diverse as Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Neil Young and produced classic albums such as Willie Nelson's triple platinum hit "Stardust" and Bill Withers' "Just As I Am" featuring the hit song "Ain't No Sunshine." Booker's 2009 solo release on Anti Records, "Potato Hole" won a GRAMMY for Best Pop Instrumental Album in 2010. After making his mark as a sideman with John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Art Farmer and others, pianist Steve Kuhn moved beyond the powerful influence of Bill Evans to become a unique stylist with an incredible technique, sense of dynamics and lyricism. Over the last ten years Steve has released several critically acclaimed CDs marking a well-deserved career renaissance. Master bassist Buster Williams is an empathetic sideman known for his subtle sense of swing. He began his professional career in 1960 with saxophonist Jimmy Heath going on to play with jazz legends Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Mary Lou Williams, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and many others. Rounding out the trio, drummer Joey Baron combines technical acuity with a deep sense of groove. The Michel CamiloTrio (with Michel Camilo, piano; Lincoln Goines, bass;Cliff Almond, drums) will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) Tuesday through Sunday, April 30th through May 5th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Camilo's musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Republic musical heritage and a rich, intelligent use of jazz harmonies and textures. Camilo composed his first piece at age five then studied at the National Conservatory for thirteen years. At age sixteen, he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Camilo's recordings and compositions have earned him numerous awards including Grammy awards, Grammy nominations, and Emmy awards. His compositions have been performed by some of the top jazz and Latin jazz artists on the scene today including Manhattan Transfer and Paquito D'Rivera. There is a $20 cover.

This concert is the culmination of Sonny and Perley's invitation to perform a prelude concert for legendary American composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, their love of language, and songs that convey the wonderful sense of Spring. Perley was raised on the jazz greats from day one (Ella was the first recorded voice she remembers hearing), and as a young girl she was captivated by the Bossa Nova sounds of Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66. Sonny's musical training began with the drums which he began playing at 7 years old. His inspiration came from his father, his aunt Marion and his godfather who made sure he had a heavy dose of listening to the jazz greats. After making his mark as a sideman with John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Art Farmer and others, pianist Steve Kuhn moved beyond the powerful influence of Bill Evans to become a unique stylist with an incredible technique, sense of dynamics and lyricism. Over the last ten years Steve has released several critically acclaimed CDs marking a well-deserved career renaissance. Master bassist Buster Williams is an empathetic sideman known for his subtle sense of swing. He began his professional career in 1960 with saxophonist Jimmy Heath going on to play with jazz legends Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Mary Lou Williams, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and many others. Rounding out the trio, drummer Joey Baron combines technical acuity with a deep sense of groove. Best known for his work with Bill Frisell, Stan Getz, John Zorn and guitarists John Scofield, John Abercrombie and Jim Hall, Joey has also performed with musicians outside of jazz including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, Laurie Anderson and Al Jarreau. Christian Sands is an emerging jazz force. A recent Steinway Artist, he possesses pianistic technique in abundance, but it perfectly matches his conception. His use of understatement accomplishes a much deeper musical goal. He takes a fresh look at the entire language of jazz: stride, swing, bebop, progressive, fusion, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban. Born May 22, 1989, Christian possessed an insatiable appetite for music. He was enrolled in music classes at age 4 and wrote his first composition at age 5. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Manhattan School of Music. His meteoric rise in the jazz world already includes two appearances at the 2006 and 2007 Grammy Awards, including an outrageous, highly publicized duet with legendary pianist Oscar Peterson. At the young age of 20 he received two GRAMMY Nominations for Best Latin Jazz Piano Solo, and Best Latin Jazz Album for his performance on Bobby Sanabria's "Kenya Revisited" featuring Candido Camero. He has shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Vibraphonist Stefan Harris, Lou Donaldson, Avery Sharpe, James Moody, Saxophonist Bill Evans, Russell Malone, Rufus Reid, Chip Jackson, Terrance Blanchard, International Drummer Alex Riel, Louis Hayes, Patti Austin, and Wycliffe Gordon to name a few. A pianist with a brilliant technique and a composer that flavors his tunes with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Michel Camilo's musical language is an expressive combination of his Dominican Republic musical heritage and a rich, intelligent use of jazz harmonies and textures. Camilo composed his first piece at age five then studied at the National Conservatory for thirteen years. At age sixteen, he became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. Mr. Camilo's recordings and compositions have earned him numerous awards including Grammy awards, Grammy nominations, and Emmy awards. His compositions have been performed by some of the top jazz and Latin jazz artists on the scene today including Manhattan Transfer and Paquito D'Rivera. There is a $20 cover.

Robert Klein will appear for one night only on Friday, May 3rd at 7:00 pm at STAGE 72 - formerly THE TRIAD (158 West 72nd Street, NYC - 212-362-2590). For more than forty years, Robert Klein has entertained audiences, and he continues to have an acclaimed career in comedy, on Broadway, on television, and in film. He was nominated twice for Grammy Awards for "Best Comedy Album of the Year" for his albums "Child of the Fifties" and "Mind Over Matter." He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor, and won a Los Angeles Drama Criatics Circle Award for his performance in the hit Neil Simon musical, "They're Playing Our Song." In 1993, Klein won an Obie and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in Wendy Wasserstein's, "The Sisters Rosensweig." His most recent special for HBO, "Robert Klein: Unfair and Unbalanced" aired on June 12th, 2010 and is also available as a DVD.
