NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND

NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, February 8th, 15th & 22nd at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: SPYRO GYRA AT THE BLUE NOTE

Spyro Gyra will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 - http://www.bluenote.net/ ) on Tuesday through Sunday, March 11th through 16th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. During its career, the band has performed over five thousand shows, released 29 albums (not counting "Best Of" compilations), and sold over 10 million albums, while also achieving one Platinum and two Gold releases. As the band celebrates 35 years since its first release and looks forward to celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, it slows little sign of slowing down, gaining Grammy nominations for each of its last four albums. The first few years saw the group's identity split into a dynamic live act and a producer-centric recording process, borne out of the rotating cast of characters springing from the band's jazz jam beginnings. The group's early albums were the product of the core band and a great number of the top session players in New York. In 1983, Beckenstein made the decision to make the albums the work of the band members he shared the stage with night after night, only supplementing with occasional guests. Although the band underwent several personnel changes in the '80s, these shifts slowed down about 20 years ago. Julio Fernandez became the group's guitarist in 1984, Scott Ambush assumed the bass chair in 1991, and Bonny Bonaparte took over the drums in 2006, making him the "new guy" at just over five years with the band. After stretches releasing albums on the MCA, Amherst, GRP, and Heads Up International imprints, Spyro Gyra returned to Amherst for its latest release, 2011's A Foreign Affair. There is a $20-$35 cover.

The Skivvies don't just strip down their musical arrangements, they literally strip down to their underwear to perform their distinctive mashups and eccentric originals for cello and ukulele, with touches of glockenspiel, melodica, and a surprising array of under-used instruments. Award-winning singer-actors Lauren Molina (Marry Me a Little, Sweeney Todd, Rock of Ages) and Nick Cearley (All Shook Up) became YouTube sensations as The Skivvies, with living room videos that displayed their powerful harmonies as well as their powerful abs. They also have a single and music video directed by Augusten Burroughs, bestselling author of Running With Scissors. They will be joined by special guest stars who will strip down and rock out. Expect a hilarious evening of genre-hopping pop perfection. On the 14th their guests are Leslie McDonel, Jason Michael Snow, Randy Harrison, Morgan James, and Nancy Anderson. On the 15th: Lin Manuel Miranda, Laura Benanti, Rob Morrison, Aaron Lazar, Mark Price, and Hannah Shankman. There is a $25-$35 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.

CABARET TONIGHT IN NYC: THE AMANDA MCBROOM PROJECT ... CONTINUING THE JOURNEY

A bright new production of the Amanda McBroom Project, created by Eric Michael Gillett, Arthur Masella and Musical Director Jeff Cubeta, brings leading ladies of both cabaret and theater together to interpret Amanda's exquisite songs at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909) over a run of three nights: Friday & Saturday, March 14th & 15th and Tuesday, March 17th, all shows at 7:00 pm. Performers include Karen Akers, Aisha de Haas, Terese Genecco, Carolyn Montgomery-Forant, and KT Sullivan with Alison Grace Bradbury, Leah Jennings, Eva Kantor, Lauren Stanford, Erin Wegner Brooks and Melanie Vaughan - and more. Amanda McBroom's name first came to the attention of the listening public when Bette Midler's version of Amanda's song "The Rose" hit number one all over the world. Her songs have been recorded by the likes of Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Judy Collins, Barbara Cook, Harry Belafonte, Betty Buckley, The Manhattan Transfer, and Donny Osmond. Her love of, and background in, musical theater (she starred in the New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and European productions of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, on Broadway in Seesaw, and in Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music and Mame), compelled her to create a musical based on her songs. 'Heartbeats' made its debut in Los Angeles and the play has enjoyed over 15 regional theater productions around the USA. There is a $20 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

Boise, Idaho is hardly the place anyone would conjure up as a hotbed of soul-blues. But for John Nemeth, it's where his love for the genre began - and the starting point for a journey that's taken him from his first gigs fronting a teenage blues band to five Blues Music Award nominations in 2013 alone. In early 2013, Nemeth traded his life on the west coast to settle down in Memphis, Tennessee. He and Jaki, that girlfriend he followed to California, had married and started a family, and Memphis made sense for multiple reasons: It's centrally located for touring, the cost of living is inexpensive, and the river town is the historical ground zero for blues, soul, and rock-and-roll. Nemeth landed in the perfect place: Electraphonic Studio, home of producer and musician Scott Bomar, who composed the film scores for Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan and produced Cyndi Lauper's Memphis Blues. Backed by the Bo-Keys, Bomar's group of veteran Memphis performers who made their names playing with the likes of Al Green, O.V. Wright, Rufus Thomas, and the Bar-Kays. Nemeth quickly laid down thirteen tracks. The tapes from that session caught the ear of music industry veteran Charles Driebe, who took the album to Denby Auble of Blue Corn Music. The Americana/roots music label quickly signed Nemeth, adding him to a roster that boasts the likes of Ruthie Foster, Gurf Morlix, and Steve Forbert. There is an $18-$28 cover.
