Quite by accident, she was relocated to East Orange, New Jersey, where she made a decision to take her chances on the New York jazz scene. After a stint as the main vocalist with Steve Coleman's M-Base Collective, she began recording on her own. In 2000 Wilson returned to Mississippi to establish Ojah Media Group, an independent multi-media entity dedicated to documenting and marketing the unique sounds emanating from Mississippi's fertile soil and its multi-cultural influences. Fascinating composers, songwriters and writers alike, the night has inspired some of the most wonderful songs and lyrics and as always, Jungr picks the less obvious and finds treasures both in her existing repertoire and in songs new to her on this inspiring theme. Arranged with her superb collaborator and accompanist, Simon Wallace, she works great songs by great songwriters including Hank Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, plus a generous mix of Jungr and Wallace's own original songs. Barb Jungr has wowed audiences and critics worldwide with her powerful reinterpretations of Bob Dylan's work. Variously described by critics as magnificent, mesmerizing and magical, Barb Jungr has built a formidable reputation as an international live performer and recording artiste. Barb has ranked at the top of Time Out New York's Best Cabaret Awards for her shows and in 2008 she also received the Nightlife Award for Outstanding Cabaret Vocalist. Elijah Balbed & the East Coast Collective (Luke Brandon - Trumpet, Mark Meadows - Piano, Alex Claffy - Bass, and Corey Fonville - Drums) will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS(2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800 - ) on Friday, September 6th with shows at 8:30 & 10:00 pm. Saxophonist and composer Elijah Jamal Balbed is one of Washington, DC's most acclaimed young musicians. His 2012 debut album release, entitled Checking In, was named #4 Best Jazz CD in 2012 by Capitol Bop, and received great reviews. The title track from this album made it to the semi-final round of the 2012-2013 International Songwriters Competition, among other renowned artists including Rene Marie, Gregory Porter, Lionel Loueke, and others. The same track is also used as a jingle on DC's only jazz radio station, WPFW. In April of 2013, Elijah completed his second residency at the historic Bohemian Caverns, where he experimented with a new idea. All along the east coast there are great jazz scenes in many different cities with many great musicians. The East Coast Collective is a concept group that draws from a rotating cast of musicians, all from different cities along the coast. Elijah returns to the Caverns with a new assemblage of this group, and some exciting new material. Tickets are $20.
Singer/pianist Patricia Barber will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) on Friday through Sunday, September 6th through 8th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Barber is a study in contradictions. She is one of the most highly sought-after concert artists in jazz, and one of the most difficult to get. Her music is uniquely hers; she doesn't explain it for herself. She doesn't have a TV, she isn't a voting member of NARAS. She is at once a big success and a well-kept secret. She will turn down most offers, choosing instead to study, compose, practice the piano, polish a language, or tend to her family and garden. She is elusive but pulls out all the stops at the few venues where she chooses to perform throughout the year. She regularly sells out concerts in European Capitals from Lisbon to Moscow. Paris is her musical second home. Call for cover/minimum information.
The Boston CD release show for the extraordinary bassist and composer Derrick Hodge's debut album on Blue Note Records, Live Today! will be presented at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday, September 6th at 7:30 pm. He is joined on stage by Christian Sands, keys; Travis Sayles, keys; and Mark Colenburg, drums. Live Today signals a new journey for bassist and composer Derrick Hodge as he embarks on a solo recording career. The title alludes to his top guiding principle in creating his debut album, a stunning achievement that showcases the profound depth and breadth of his musicality. Even though Hodge has played with such jazz titans as pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter (and labelmate) Terence Blanchard, as well as R&B stars Jill Scott and Maxwell, the 33-year-old bassist is probably best known for anchoring the Grammy award-winning Robert Glasper Experiment. Similar to how Glasper concocts a distinctive melange of modern jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, Live Today too integrates those genres and more into something that's potent and personal. However, it is no Experiment offshoot. Similarities aside, the Live Today asserts a unique sound. There is a $25 cover.
