An NEA Jazz Master, 20-time Grammy winner, prolific composer and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea (piano & keyboards) will perform with the Vigil (Hadrien Feraud, bass; Marcus Gilmore, drums; Tim Garland, saxes, flute, bass clarinet; Charles Altura, guitar) at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, September 23rd through 29th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Corea has attained living legend status after four decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering. From straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children's songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is awe-inspiring. A tirelessly creative spirit, Chick continues to forge ahead, continually reinventing himself in the process. Since embarking on a solo career in 1966, Chick has been at the forefront of jazz, both as a renowned pianist forging new ground with his acoustic jazz bands and as an innovative electric keyboardist with Return to Forever and the Elektric Band. His extensive discography boasts numerous essential albums, beginning with his 1968 classic, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs. There is a $45 cover.


Mary Foster Conklin returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with her acclaimed show LIFE IS A BITCH, a collection of songs by Fran Landesman. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, September 26th at 7:00 pm; Friday & Saturday, October 27th & 28th at 9:30 pm; and Wednesday, October 9th at 9:30 pm. She is joined on stage by John diMartino - piano, Ed Howard / Marco Panascia - bass, and special vocal guest John diPinto. Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," is best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will consist of a musical assortment of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Suzannah McCorkle. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.



Jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC)202-299-0800)) on Friday & Saturday, September 27th & 28th at 8:00 pm. Pelt is an up and coming firebrand in the tradition of Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. A California native, Jeremy Pelt arrived in New York in 1998 after graduating from Berklee College of Music. Once he got there, it wasn't long before he started being noticed by a lot of top musicians in the city. His first professional Jazz gig was playing with the Mingus Big Band. Pelt has performed and/or recorded with some of the jazz world's most high profile players including Roy Hargrove, Ravi Coltrane, Greg Osby, Cassandra Wilson and the Mingus Big Band among others. Vibraphonist Roy Ayers will perform atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC)202-337-4141)) on Thursday through Sunday, September 26th through 29th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Ayers could very well be the best jazz/R&B artist you don't know. In his 40-plus years as a vibraphonist, he has produced a string of soul and funk classics, like "We Live In Brooklyn Baby" and "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," that has arguably made him the second-most sampled musician in hip-hop, after James Brown. Constantly performing and recording since the 1960's, he is the most well known jazz vibraphonists. He has produced some of the most loved modern soul-jazz records of all time. Classics beyond genre such as, "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", most influential afro-jazz with musician Fela Kuti, "Africa)Centre Of The World", and the most seminal jazz-funk, such as "Running Away". It was sixty years ago that Massey Hall was host to what has been forever heralded as "The Greatest Jazz Concert Ever". For one glorious night, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell and Charles Mingus left an indelible mark on the history of jazz in Toronto and throughout the world. It was the only time these five giants of jazz recorded as a unit, and the last recorded meeting of Parker and Gillespie. The audience was small)the checks bounced)but the music was legend. Manolo Mairena, a native of Costa Rica and now a New England based vocalist and percussionist, brings his latest project to the R-Bar with fresh energy and new compositions from his first CD, Mi Oportunidad. Mairena has had a bead on the pulse of the Boston music scene for a very long time, having played regularly with groups La Clave Secreta, Mango Blue, Cinco Son and Balaton. Returning to the Regattabar with his own group, Curubande, Mairena creates a performance to move his audience to dance with an infusion of latin rhythms from a Son Montuno, Bolero, and Salsa to contemporary Cuban music which brings all to the dance floor with just the right swing! This summer, Seth Bisen-Hersh presented his 250th Talent Showcase, which he has been producing, emceeing and accompanying nearly weekly since April 2007 at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC)212-757-0788). To celebrate, he is presenting five 250th Showcase Gala Celebration Concerts of his work featuring 85 showcase alumni to celebrate!
