CABARET TONIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO: PAULA WEST IN EXTENDED RUN AT FEINSTEIN'S

San Francisco based jazz vocalist Paula West will perform at FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) in a 4-week engagement opening on Thursday, February 13th, with shows running Thursday through Sunday, through March 9th. Known for her rich, powerful contralto voice, West will present an all-new show featuring an eclectic range of songs - from memorable jazz standards by Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hart, to contemporary American classics by Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Accompanied by her four-piece band, West will take San Francisco audiences on a musical journey through the ages. Born into a Marine Corps family in San Diego, California, Paula West was initially exposed to classical music. It wasn't until college that West began listening to jazz singers such as Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn. After college, West moved to San Francisco, unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. Buying old records from thrift shops, she studied them and then began singing classes. As she became more secure in her talent, she ventured into jam sessions, places where an open mike gave her a chance to perform before an audience. It was at one of these sessions that she met a pianist who would join her in the climb to her own musical identity and her musical success. His name was Ken Muir, and he continues as her accompanist today. West went on to study with Faith Winthrop, developing her unique tone and delivery. She learned how to sustain a note without a vibrato, which is now almost a Paula West trademark. NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, February 8th, 15th & 22nd at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. opens the 47th season of inspirational, innovative and exciting stage productions with a special Valentine's Day concert starring the dynamic, award-winning singer/actress Lillias White in two performances of "A Woman On Love" on Friday, February 14th with shows at 7:00 & 10:00 pm at the LANGSTON HUGHES AUDITORIUM AT THE SCHOMBURG CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN BLACK CULTURE (515 Malcolm X Boulevard, NYC - 212-582-5860). The Laszlo Gardony Quartet (Laszlo Gardony, piano, composer, arranger; Stan Strickland, vocals, saxophone, flute, bass clarinet; Yoron Israel, drums; and John Lockwood, bass) will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Wednesday, February 12th at 7:30 pm. Laszlo Gardony is a critically acclaimed artist who has brought his soulful improvisations and compositions to audiences in 25 countries. Winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, Gardony has been called "a pianist worthy of praise within the highest pantheon of performers" by Jazz Review.com and "a great pianist" by Dave Brubeck. He has released 10 albums, leading groups that included Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Mick Goodrick, Jamey Haddad, Bob Moses, Yoron Israel, John Lockwood among others. Gardony has been living in Boston for the past thirty years, where he is a Professor of Piano at Berklee College of Music. There is a $20 cover.

A true jazz singer in the manner of Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, and Shirley Horn, Miss Mann possesses a rich timbre, flexibility, and range which often invites comparisons to Sarah Vaughan. A striking song stylist and fearless improviser, she often appears on stage with jazz legend Diane Schuur, and her latest CD, Celestial Anomaly, with pianist Kenny Werner, has been on the JazzWeek national radio charts for several months. Mr. De Felitta is an accomplished jazz pianist and independent filmmaker, whose work as a writer and director has been shown and honored around the world, including at the festivals in Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca (New York,) South By Southwest (Austin,) and Milan. His award-winning documentary about singer Jackie Paris, 'Tis Autumn, has toured festivals nationwide. City Island, which De Felitta wrote and directed, stars Andy Garcia, Julianna Margulies, Emily Mortimer, Steven Strait, and Alan Arkin, and premiered in the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival where it won the coveted Audience Award. NYC: CYRILLE AIMEE AT BIRDLAND

Jazz vocalist Cyrille Aimee will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, February 10th through 15th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Aimee has a culturally rich background (Dominican and French Gypsy) and conservatory training (SUNY Purchase) that help to form the rhythmic and expressive foundation by which a jury of legendary vocalists including Al Jarreau, Kurt Elling, Dianne Reeves and Dee Dee Bridgewater judged her to be a finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition in 2010. At the young age of twenty-six, Cyrille has since become one of the hottest young artists on the New York scene.
