Ms. Hall's debut solo show will pay tribute to the life and legend of one of the true icons of the twentieth century. Marlene Dietrich began her career in the fabled cabarets and revues of 1920s Berlin, conquered Hollywood as one of its most beautiful and fascinating stars, took a brave stand as a German against Hitler during World War II, and, later in life, reinvented herself as a cabaret and concert artist. The show features Berlin cabaret songs, jazz standards, French chansons, folk songs, and, of course, Dietrich's famous film songs. The show features music of Friedrich Hollaender, Cole Porter, Lerner and Loewe, Fats Waller, Robert Stolz, Charles Trenet, and Pete Seeger. NYC: GRETCHEN REINHAGEN IN TRIBUTE SHOW TO JANIS JOPLIN
MEMBER FOR MEMBER DISCOUNT - $5 OFF THE COVER

Nightlife, Bistro and MAC Award winning artist Gretchen Reinhagen and her all-girl band return to DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) with her acclaimed show "Gretchen Sings Janis Joplin's Pearl." Joining Gretchen will be Musical Director Tracy Stark at the piano, Lisa Brigantino on bass and guitar, and drummer Donna Kelly. Final performance is scheduled for Thursday, November 4th at 7:00 pm. Barry Kleinbort directs. "Gretchen Sings Janis Joplin's Pearl" was originally created as part of the award winning "Under the Covers" series this past March, produced by Lennie Watts. Artists in the series were asked to choose their favorite album and cover it, start to finish. In choosing Pearl, Gretchen recreates the iconic final album of legendary blues rocker Janis Joplin, exploring not only the rock side of the album with songs like "Move Over" and "Half Moon," but also the quieter moments with songs like "A Woman Left Lonely" and "Trust Me." In addition, she explores moments from Janis Joplin's life; the last of which were spent recording this album. Joplin did not live to see Pearl released in early 1971, which became the biggest selling album of her career, and produced her only #1 hit, "Me and Bobby McGee." There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.$15 cover for members of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE.

"HERE & THERE" - THOUGHTS, COMMENTS, OBSERVATIONS FROM CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE

"HERE & THERE" - THOUGHTS, COMMENTS, OBSERVATIONS

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Robert Burns wrote: "The best laid schemes o' mice an' men / Gang aft agley." Please don't ask me to pronounce that, but that indeed is what happened this week. CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE ran out of cash. Not unusual - happens all the time. But this is "pay the rent" week, and our intention was to rent the room in this apartment in Corona, Queens, for one more month while I recovered from my surgery on Monday. But without money for rent, those plans had to be changed. Instead, I will be temporarily moving in with my friend Daniel at the apartment he rents (with 2 others) in Jackson Heights, thanks to the generosity of his landlord. But this is strictly temporary (3 weeks max) while we save up cash, hunt for, and hopefully find, a place of our own.
There are some complications: There is no DSL or WIFI signal at Daniel's apartment - and the earliest we can get one installed is 3 weeks. We are seeking a solution for this and will keep you informed. I will be in this current space through Sunday noon - and will publish a somewhat abbreviated Monday issue of CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE before I leave here on Sunday. I will also update the home page on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website through Tuesday (I had planned to do that anyway) and hopefully we'll be back online on Wednesday. Meantime, we anxiously seek donations, membership donations, advance banner orders - anything to raise funds to help us though this crisis. But wait - there's more.

First, some good news: I went back to ELMHURST HOSPITAL yesterday for a re-test of my blood pressure, just as a safety precaution for my upcoming hernia operation on Monday, November 1st, as well as another precautionary test: an echocardiogram. From the above paragraphs, I am sure you can deduce the reason for my increased blood pressure readings at the original tests last week). Thanks to some Yoga exercises taught me by the examiner last week, I passed both tests with flying colors! Not such good news: I will be moving my things to Daniel's apartment on Sunday, and most of the work will have to be done by Daniel. Fortunately, his apartment is only a few steps from street level (I'm on the 3rd floor here), but it still will be some bit of work. So, publishing the MEMBERS ONLY newsletter on Saturday, the Monday newsletter on Sunday, the operation on Monday - all of this "on a wing & a prayer", trusting that there will be funds available for the taxi to move us and other expenses. It will be interesting to see what my blood pressure will be on Tuesday!
Meantime, everything is on HOLD until we get some financial matters settled. I was planning on a CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE HOLIDAY PARTY for early December, and this might still happen, but I dare not go forward with everything else in limbo: no internet connection, no official living quarters, no funds until the Social Security check comes in mid-month, and the complete unknown factor: will there be some expenses not covered by Medicare that I will need to pay?
I always say, it's much more fun on the roller coaster than on the merry-go-round, but sometimes this roller coaster life I'm living gets to be just a little too much to handle! So, not only do I need your support financially, I also need your best thoughts and prayers.

GOOD NEWS FOR METROPOLITAN ROOM FANS ON HALLOWEEN

Good news for all THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440 - / ) fans - this year's NYC HALLOWEEN PARADE in Greenwich Village will be a little shorter this year and won't impact this Chelsea hotspot as in previous years. The route on Sunday night, October 31st, is now five blocks shorter because of the NYPD's new rule requiring all city parades to cut down their routes by 25 percent or be limited to five hours. So the route up Sixth Avenue ends at 16th Street, not 23rd Street. The cutbacks on parades are expected to save the police department $3 million a year in overtime pay for extra officers.

Ben Hudson helps celebrate Halloween at THE BUTTERFLY CLUB (204 Bank Street, South Melbourne, VIC - 03 96902000 - ) on Thursday through Sunday, October 28th through 31st at 7:00 pm (6:00 pm on Sunday) with his show "Monsters in My Closet". Combining Ben Hudson's formidable height with his haunting deep baritone voice Monsters In My Closet is set to titillate and spook with tales of Pumpkin Kings, Bearded Ladies and a bit of incest. Featuring a range of songs from Kurt Weill to Gnarls Barkley. Accompanied by Trevor Jones. Graduating from WAAPA in 2009 this is Ben Hudsons debut cabaret at The Butterfly Club. Call for cover/minimum information.

AUS: THE TERRIBLE ACCOUNT OF THE ST. FIACRIUS ORPHANS

Dr. Dorian P Urinberry III, Alphonse Cheese-Probert and Heapus Maximus as they take you on a hellish journey through the darkened halls of the St. Fiacrius Home For Wayward Children at THE BUTTERFLY CLUB (204 Bank Street, South Melbourne, VIC - 03 96902000 - ) on Thursday through Sunday, October 28th through 31st at 9:00 pm (8:00 pm on Sunday), as part of the club's Halloween celebration. Like a demented BBC radio play accompanied by a 70s slasher film score, The Laudanum Project tell stories that horrify and delight in equal measure. The effects will be devastating. Call for cover/minimum information.

AUS: ATROCITY: CABARET DU GRAND GUIGNOL

As part three of the Halloween celebration at THE BUTTERFLY CLUB (204 Bank Street, South Melbourne, VIC - 03 96902000 - ) is ATROCITY, a unique ingenious character comedy, presented on Friday & Saturday, October 29th & 30th at 10:30 pm. Based on the famed Theatre du Grand Guignol of old, ATROCITY is a contemporary journey into the dark mind of man - a cacophony of mayhem and madness, sex and violence, song and dance, cabaret and burlesque that is not for the faint of heart. Espousing the creed 'Beauty, Truth, Horror,' it is a theatrical experience like no other. The show is performed by Stevl Shefn and his Translator Fatima, and created by 2003 Raw Comedy winner Steve Sheehan. Two new original clowns: one all color and movement, a downtrodden everyman in the tradition of Borat and the Marx Bros; the other a colorless translator, unknown but for her expressive eyes and assured translation. As one shaggy dog story follows another Stevl's survival is commendable, but who is Fatima and what's her story? Rated R-18+. Call for cover/minimum information.
