D.C.: ROY HARGROVE AT BLUES ALLEY
Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Roy Hargrove will perform at BLUES ALLEY(1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141 - ) on Tuesday through Sunday, October 8th through 13th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. The Dallas born trumpeter has never been short of hipness. Mentored as a teenager by Wynton Marsalis, he has a flaring tone and a lyrical warmth; his fusing of traditional and contemporary music turns his gigs into exuberant jazz history lessons. With a band including the excellent New Orleans-born pianist Sullivan Fortner, and formidable young drummer Quincy Phillips, Hargrove's snappy phrase turns and vibrato-laden long notes, pared with alto saxist Justin Robinson's fluent improvisations, embellish his usual selection of swingers and Latin shuffles. In the game since 1970, Tim Berne still amazes with each new project he leads. Snakeoil Quartet is no different. Berne's music never fails to challenge and delight the human ear. Snakeoil Quartet includes pianist, Matt Mitchell, percussionist, Ches Smith, and Oscar Noriega on bass clarinet, acclaimed musicians in their own right who master Berne's compositions and challenge each other through skillful improvisation.
