Three Wishes for Sondheimas will be presented at
54 BELOW (254 West 54th Street, NYC - 646-476-3551) on Saturday, March 22nd at 11:00 pm. Falling on March 22nd, Sondheimas commemorates the Stephen Sondheim's birth much in the manner of another perennially single Jewish boy whose world view was, let's just say, a lot less wry. Direct from the (electronic) pages of Rachel Shukert's Kindle single "Let Me Be Your Star," and the (electronic) pages of the "F*ck Yeah Stephen Sondheim" Tumblr, comes the world's first celebration of this holiday for the ages. One part concert, one part hilarious worship service - our Sondheimas celebration will feature the premiere of Shukert's pageant retelling the Birth of Steve as you've never seen it before, a homily by award-winning author/Broadway dancer Tim Federle (author of Better Nate Than Ever, dancer in Gypsy) and Sondheim songs familiar and rare, performed by Broadway talent including Molly Pope, Leah Horowitz (Follies), Terry Burrell (Dreamgirls, Into the Woods), Tamra Hayden (Cabaret), Justin Barnette (Hairspray, Fiorello! at Encores!) and the Sondheimas Tabernacle Choir. Make like the (Franklin) Shepards and Wise Guys, and follow the greatest star Broadway has ever known to 54 Below in honor of this great day. And if you're lucky, you might even get called on stage to help decorate the holiday beanstalk or sit in the festively decorated barber's chair and tell Sweeney Todd about your Sondheimas wishes. There is a $25-$35 cover plus a $25 food/drink minimum.
NYC: BARBARA CARROLL SATURDAYS AT BIRDLAND
NYC Cabaret/Jazz icon Barbara Carroll performs at
BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Saturdays, February 8th, 15th & 22nd at 6:00 pm. She is joined by her long-time bassist Jay Leonhart. Barbara Carroll's still evolving career as a jazz pianist began when she played her first New York engagement opposite Dizzy Gillespie's big band at the Downbeat Club in 1947. A thrilling if a trifle unsettling debut for a young female pianist from Worcester, Massachusetts who began playing the piano at five and who's family was wise enough to give her lessons that provided her with a basic knowledge of classical technique. In 1978, she was booked into the Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle hotel for a two week engagement - and stayed for twenty five years. It was at the Carlyle that she began to feature her singing as an integral part of her performances. Following her 25 years at the Carlyle, she is well into another long run in the famous Oak Room at New York's Algonquin Hotel, making a significant and successful effort to incorporate jazz playing into a cabaret venue. Other recent engagements have included concerts at Philharmonic Hall in Naples, Florida, the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, concerts at the Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as twelve sold out performances at Dizzy's Club, at Jazz at Lincoln Center. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

One of his earliest influences was avant-garde saxophonist Albert Ayler, with whom Peacock performed and recorded in the 1960s. His music has also been greatly affected by his studies of Eastern music and philosophy. Since the 1980s, Peacock has been adding contemporary twists to old standards with pianist Keith Jarrett's trio including drummer Jack DeJohnette. Peacock's current group is a leaderless, cooperative and exploratory trio. "Pianist Marc Copland was early considered an heir to Bill Evans but has gone on to redefine jazz to the cutting edge. Rounding out the trio, drummer Joey Baron combines technical acuity with a deep sense of groove. Best known for his work with Bill Frisell, Stan Getz, John Zorn and guitarists John Scofield, John Abercrombie and Jim Hall, Joey has also performed with musicians outside of jazz including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, Laurie Anderson and Al Jarreau. Hernandez plays on the cutting edge of today's music with technical prowess and versatility. His drumming also reflects a proud musical heritage rooted in folklore tradition. Giovanni Hidalgo was raised in a household surrounded by drums, bongos, congas and timbales. Hidalgo auditioned and was hired by the Batacumbele Band in 1980. NYC: NEWISH JEWISH MUSIC FESTIVAL: ORAN ETKIN: REIMAGINING BENNY GOODMAN
Praised as a great clarinetist and all-around improviser by the New York Times, Israeli-American clarinetist Oran Etkin makes his Dizzy's debut for the Newish Jewish Music Festival on Saturday, March 22nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm at

This show celebrates the daring and playful spirit of Benny Goodman, not by recreating his music, but by getting at the essence of who he was and the spirit that he brought to the music. Part of the first-ever Newish Jewish Music Festival, a city-wide festival celebrating contemporary Jewish and Israeli culture and music. There is a $45 cover.
