He began his career as a bandleader with Blue Note Records in 1952 and, already at age 25, he had found his sound, though it would continue to sweeten over the years - earning him his famed nickname -"Sweet Poppa Lou." He made a series of classic records for Blue Note in the 50's, and takes pride in having showcased many musicians who made their first records as sidemen for him: Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell, Donald Byrd, Horace Parlan, and others. After also making some excellent recordings for Cadet and Argo Records in the early 60s, Lou's return to Blue Note in 1967 was marked by one of his most famous recordings, Alligator Bogaloo. Lou was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by North Carolina A & T University and a scholarship was established in his name that is awarded to the most gifted jazz musician at North Carolina A & T University each year. TONIGHT! NYC: THE BLUE NOTE PRESENTS TAKE 6

TONIGHT! NYC: THE BLUE NOTE PRESENTS TAKE 6

Jazz-vocal group Take 6 will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, May 7th through 12th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Take 6 is the quintessential a cappela group and model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices (Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea, Khristian Dentley) united in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. With praise from such luminaries as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, the multi-platinum selling sextet has toured across the globe, collaborated across genres, and is recognized as the pre-eminent a capella group in the world. The group has come a long way from their days at Huntsville, Alabama's Oakwood College where McKnight formed the group as The Gentleman's Estate Quartet in 1980. When tenor Mark Kibble heard the group rehearsing in the dorm bathroom, he joined in the harmonies and performed on stage that night. When Mervyn Warren joined shortly afterward, they took the name Alliance. Yet, when they signed to Reprise Records/Warner Bros. in 1987, they found that there was another group with the same name, so they became Take 6. Their self-titled debut CD won over jazz and pop critics, scored two 1988 Grammy Awards, landed in the Top Ten Billboard Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Christian Charts, and they've never slowed down. There is a $30-$45 cover.

TONIGHT! NYC: BEN RIMALOWER: PATTI ISSUES IN MAY AT THE DUPLEX

Patti Issues will be performed by Ben Rimalower at THE DUPLEX CABARET THEATRE (61 Christopher Street, NYC - 212-255-5438) on Monday, May 6th at 7:00 pm; and Saturdays, May 11th, 18th & 25th at 9:30 pm. Patti Issues mark's Rimalower's debut as a playwright and performer, after serving as the director of numerous Off-Broadway plays, concerts and all-star benefits (and blogging for the Huffington Post). With a mix of comic irreverence, stark candor and show-biz bravado, Patti Issues poignantly explores the challenges facing LGBT parents and children while shining unique light on gay men's time-old obsessions with divas. When Ben Rimalower was eight years old, his father came out of the closet and embarked on a drug-fueled tear that left his family in tatters. Amid the chaos of his young life, Ben found comfort - like so many gay boys before him and after - in musical theater, and specifically in the transportive voice of Broadway star Patti LuPone. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

Jazz critics agree that "Sweet Poppa Lou" Donaldson is one of the greatest alto saxophonists of all time. He was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame and is the recipient of countless other honors and awards for his outstanding contributions to jazz, America's "classical music." There is a $30 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
