Known for his groundbreaking performances on "My So Called Life" and "Noah's Arc", followed by an impressive career on stage and screen, Wilson Cruz joins the Scott Nevins from truTV's hit show "The Smoking Gun Presents" for a special one night only on Friday, November 25th at 7:00 pm at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 - http://www.westbankcafe.com/ ). The show is filled with comedy, music, scandalous and hilarious stories plus a Q&A with the audience. There is a $25 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
METROJAM, the weekly cabaret/jazz open mic event held at THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440), will have its next show on Friday, November 25th at 10:00 pm, featuring host Jenna Esposito. The show will continue every Friday night. Accompaniment is provided by the MetroJam house band: John DiPinto on piano, Ritt Henn on bass, and Bobby Sher on drums. Open-mic performers have a chance to perform with a full jazz band. If you're planning to perform, please arrive by 9:30 pm to sign up and be sure to bring two copies of your music (up-tempos are recommended!). Baby Jane Dexter's brand new show, Still Bad, Still Blue debuts atTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) for eight performances only, beginning Friday, November 25th and running on consecutive Fridays & Saturdays through December 23rd (there will be no performance December 2nd). Sharing the stage will be her respected musical partner Ross Patterson. Elissa Patterson serves as artistic consultant. Still Bad, Still Blue is another powerful, inspiring and light-hearted potpourri of unique songs and arrangements given Ms. Dexter's one of a kind haunting spin. The show features an eclectic song list including gems by the likes of Jimmy McHugh & Dorothy Fields, Abbey Lincoln, Clyde Otis, Bessie Smith, Irma Thomas, Stephen Sondheim - and many more. This new show will contain some potent musical moments along with her trademark blend of profound and artistically whimsical bon mots. Critics and peers have honored her through the years and she has received six major MAC Awards, two Nightlife Awards and two Back Stage Bistro Awards. A veteran of legendary clubs like Reno Sweeney and The Ballroom, Ms. Dexter has performed at all the major New York venues and throughout the country over the years. Billie Roe returns to the cabaret stage at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on 4 Fridays in November: November 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, all shows at 7:00 pm. Billie will take you on a journey through dark shadows, tough guys, good wives, and 'dangerous dames' as she explores the world of classic American Film Noir through the stylized songs of the 40s as well as the music of Cy Coleman, Sade, Tom Waits, Noel Coward, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Henry Mancini, and others. Having played most of the clubs in the 70s and early 80s including Les Mouches where she debuted her acclaimed act 'The Heat Is On', and opened for Gloria Gaynor, Billie is delighted to be returning to the New York cabaret stage. Ms. Roe sang with the San Diego Symphony in a salute to Cole Porter, and has performed in regional theatres throughout the country. Directed by Lennie Watts, the show features Musical Director Steven Ray Watkins on piano, with Michael Blanco on Bass, and Tim Lykins on Drums. Actress Emily Bergl be performing on Mondays at the THE ALGONQUIN OAK ROOM (59 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-419-9331) with her cabaret, "Kidding on the Square" November 21st through December 19th at 7:30 pm with a surprise set of new songs each night. She will be accompanied by Jonathan Mastro, composer and musical director of the hit revival of "Our Town," directed by David Cromer. Ms. Bergl starred as Beth Young on ABC's "Desperate Housewives," and currently plays Tammi Bryant on TNT's "Southland." She most recently appeared on the New York stage in Nora Ephron's "Love, Loss and What I Wore," and in Second Stage's "Becky Shaw," and has starred in several Broadway productions. "Kidding on the Square," directed by Sarna Lapine, is a vintage cabaret told from the perspective of a modern girl. Drawing upon her work as an actress, Ms. Bergl creates a variety of colorful characters to bring the elegant melodies of the 1920's and 30's to life, blending classic hits from Noel Coward to Fats Waller with modern favorites from Madonna to the Scissor Sisters.
