MASSACHUSETTS: AMAZING THINGS OPEN MIC FEATURING KAREN MULVEY
Every second Wednesday of the month Leslie Holmes hosts an amazing Open Mic night at the AMAZING THINGS ARTS CENTER(160 Hollis Street, Framingham, MA - 508-405-2787), and each show features a special guest. On Wednesday, October 9th the featured guest will be Karen Mulvey. Karen E. Mulvey made her cabaret debut in April as part of BACA's CabaretFest with her new show, ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE: the Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner. She will return to the stage doing what she loves most - telling stories through music. Karen began singing at age eight and held a variety of roles throughout her school career. After college, Karen sang with local groups including New England Light Opera and Reagle Music Theatre before deciding to focus primarily on cabaret work. Though classically trained, her true interest lies in show tunes, jazz and adult contemporary music. Pianist for the open mic is Tom LaMark. The open-mic starts at 7:00 pm (signup at 6:30 pm), and the featured performers go on at 8:10 pm. There is an $10 cover charge ($9 cover for BACA members).
BOSTON: AARDVARK JAZZ ORCHESTRA 41ST SEASON OPENER - BLUES AND OTHER HUES
The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, one of the longest running large jazz ensembles in the world, will open its 41st season at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111 - ) on Wednesday, October 9th at 8:00 pm. Their show is called 'Blues and Other Hues'. The legendary band, with vocalists Jerry Edwards and Grace Hughes, will explore many shades of blues, from Duke Ellington's classic blues Such Sweet Thunder to Mark Harvey's Boston Boy (inspired by Boston-born jazz maven Nat Hentoff), plus Billy Strayhorn's lush ballad Daydream, and other music spanning the Aardvark spectrum.
