PlazaCUBA presents Wil Campa y su Gran Union, a12-piece Cuban Son orchestra led by Wil Campa (formerly of Maraca and Cumbre) atYOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Saturday, August 10th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Wil Campa represents the very best of Cuban Son. The music that lives in his soul! His voice will capture and embrace you, with an undeniable, engaging stage presence and heralded as one Cuba's leading artists. In 2005 Wil formed what is known today as one of Cuba's elite groups WIL CAMPA Y SU ORQUESTA. Releasing two albums, one in 2006 "ES TIEMPO" and 2011 "TODO ES POSIBLE," winning him a nomination for BEST ALBUM 2012 at the CUBADISCO (Cuba's equivalent of the Grammy's). Eric Comstock and Barbara Fasano, whose electrifying combination of warmth, wit, swing and sensuality have made them the nightclub world's most celebrated team, will be making their seventh appearance at THE ROYAL ROOM at THE COLONY HOTEL (155 Hammond Avenue, Palm Beach, FL - 561-659-8100) on Fridays & Saturdays, July 26th through August 10th at 8:30 pm. The talented couple are every bit as entertaining as they are musically savvy. Trumpeter and Grammy Winner Terence Blanchard will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday through Sunday, August 8th through 11th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Blanchard was born in New Orleans. In his teens Blanchard attended the New Orleans Center of Creative Arts, where he studied and played with saxophonist Donald Harrison. Harrison and Blanchard replaced Wynton and Branford Marsalis in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Blanchard is well known as a performer and musical composer for films, including several by Spike Lee. For Lee's film Mo' Better Blues Blanchard was musical arranger and a trumpet coach for actor Denzel Washington. Despite his interest and participation in film, television and theater, though, Blanchard regards himself first and foremost as a jazz musician. Call for cover/minimum information.
One of the world's most innovative creators of Afro-Cuban music and Latin Jazz Hilario Duran will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) Thursday through Saturday, August 8th, 9th & 10th at 8:00 pm. Duran produces stunning feats of musical beauty every time he takes the stage. Cuban piano virtuoso Chucho Valdes calls him "unparalleled". Jazz Bistro considers it an honour to present him with three of the finest musicians they have ever had the pleasure of hosting: Roberto Occhipinti on Bass, Mark Kelso on Drums and Vancouver based Saxophonist Phil Dwyer, a featured guest on Friday and Saturday evening. The duo of Tuck and Patti will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Friday & Saturday, August 9th & 10th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Their special guest is VINX Tuck and Patti are celebrating 35 years of music collaboration with a year long celebration touring, as well as releasing a new CD in the first half of 2013! The Rodriguez Brothers Band (Rob Rodriguez, Piano; Mike Rodriguez, Trumpet; Carlos Henriquez, Bass; Ludwig Afonso, Drums; Mauricio Herrera, Percussion) performs at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, August 9th, 10th & 11th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The band is co-led by pianist/composer Robert and trumpeter/composer Michael. Individually they have worked with Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, Quincy Jones, and Harry Connick Jr., to name a few. Together, they have released several well-received records rooted in, but not limited to, Afro-Cuban music and jazz. Their latest record, Mood Swing, featuring Clarence Penn and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist Carlos Henriquez, is aptly named for a series of compositions that juxtapose moods and emotions within these musical traditions. Bryan Batt's show BATT ON A HOT TIN ROOF will play atTHE CRAZY COQS AT BRASSERIE ZEDEL (20 Sherwood St, Piccadilly, London W1F 7ED - 020 7734 4888) on Tuesday through Saturday, August 6th through 10th at 8:00 pm. This is a show born out of Hurricane Katrina. Broadway veteran and Mad Men star Bryan Batt grew up in New Orleans, a city that fostered his love of music and theatre. After experiencing the flooding and devastation of his hometown, he put together a one-man cabaret show paying tribute to his life there. The music from the show features Broadway and some original material written for Bryan, peppered with the comedic skills that only Mr. Batt can provide. The cabaret experience is a divine exploration through the wacky and wildly entertaining mind of Bryan Batt. Television audiences know Batt from his two-time Screen Actors Guild Award-winning performance as Salvatore Romano on the critically acclaimed television series, Mad Men. New York audiences have been delighted by Bryan's brilliant stage performances in Jeffrey, Beauty and the Beast, Cats, Starlight Express, Sunset Boulevard, La Cage and The Scarlet Pimpernel. Batt is a brilliant comedic actor, which began with his long run in the hilarious Off-Broadway hit show Forbidden Broadway.
