SALEM, NY: THE SOUND OF MUSIC SOARS AT THE FORT - JUNE 24th

Director Tim Nelson and his adult acting troupe from THE ROSE CENTER THEATER in Westminster, California, return to The MAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200) for their annual summer outing the weekend of Friday through Sunday, June 24th through 26th with Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical, The Sound of Music. The Sound of Music plays Friday and Saturday, June 24th & 25th at 8:00 pm, and Sunday, June 26th, at 2:00 pm.Once a year the group fills the Salem stage with the most popular musicals in the literature, including past productions of Carousel, Man of La Mancha, Phantom, and The Secret Garden. The Sound of Music is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she struggles with her decision to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children. Many songs from the musical have become standards, such as "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", "Do-Re-Mi", and the title song "The Sound of Music". The original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened on November 16, 1959. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, out of nine nominations. The show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards. The Sound of Music was the last musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Oscar Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere. In addition to the California actors, Nelson, who also works at Albany's Park Playhouse, has assembled a cast of some of the region's most accomplished young actors, including Ariana Papaleo and George Franklin. Discounted tickets are available for seniors and young people twelve and under. More information is available on the theater's website ( http://www.fortsalemtheater.com ) or by calling the theater at 518-854-9200.

DALLAS, TX: CAROLYN LEE JONES RELEASES NEW CD AT THE KITCHEN CAFE!

Texas based Carolyn Lee Jones released her latest CD - In A Long White Room - on Friday, June 10th at THE KITCHEN CAFE (17370 Preston Rd #415 - 972-818-3400). Carolyn Lee Jones's influences and choices of genre are as broad as her vocal styling is rich. She makes standards sound new and the new sound standard. It is something of an audio calling card, the perfect representation of who she is and the musicians in her band. Her musical journey began as a child while growing up in Nebraska. During her formative years Carolyn sang in her school choirs and studied voice. Both of her parents were gifted musicians. After graduation, the lure of a bigger city drew her to Dallas, Texas where she pursued a successful 1st career in retailing for luxury stores. Carolyn traveled the world and continued to seek out music-related opportunities by producing and performing jazz shows while on the road. In 2008, she made the decision to pursue music full time as a jazz vocalist and band leader. With influences ranging from Julie London, Anita O'Day and Shirley Horn to Tony Bennett, Diana Krall and Laura Nyro, Carolyn Lee Jones is a melodic jazz-pop singer-stylist with a combination of rich and expressive vocals. A vibrant vocalist with a love of both jazz and modern music, Carolyn's eclectic repertoire includes beautiful renditions of familiar standards from the Great American Songbook, the evolution of vintage retro pop songs into the jazz context and new material. Carolyn performs with her ensembles at a variety of venues, festivals, and for corporate and private events. Her extensive repertoire, combined with an outstanding band of musicians are her ingredients for a successful performance.
