NY STATE: MARRIAGE MUSICAL, I DO! I DO! SET ON FORT SALEM STAGE

NY STATE: MARRIAGE MUSICAL, I DO! I DO! SET ON FORT SALEM STAGE

Opening on Friday, July 5th for two weekends, TheMAINSTAGE AT FORT SALEM THEATER (11 East Broadway, Salem, NY - 518-854-9200 ) continues its summer season staging I Do! I Do!, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's classic musical about fifty years of marriage. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm, July 5th through 7th & 12th through 14th. The original Broadway production in 1966 starred Mary Martin and Robert Preston, and brought him a Tony Award for his work. To portray the timeless characters they created, the Fort has enlisted the services of Broadway and film performer Jim Raposa and his stage partner from last year's Significant Others, a young veteran of national tours and regional theater, Saratogian Rosie Spring. Jones and Schmidt hit pay dirt with their first show together, The Fantasticks, in 1960 and struggled to match its popularity. After some success with 110 in the Shade, the musical based on The Rainmaker, they adapted a small 1951 play about marriage, The Fourposter, by Jan de Hartog, which had served as a vehicle for husband-and-wife team, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. That production won Tonys for Best Play and for Best Director (Jose Ferrer). The musical adaptation, I Do! I Do!, ran for 580 performances. A Farm-to-Table Dinner Theater Package with local Gardenworks Farm is available on Saturday, July 6th. Information online at http://fortsalemtheater.com or by calling the Fort's box office

NYC: LOUIS HAYES "CANNONBALL ADDERLEY LEGACY" AT BIRDLAND THROUGH SATURDAY

NYC: LOUIS HAYES "CANNONBALL ADDERLEY LEGACY" AT BIRDLAND THROUGH SATURDAY

Louis Hayes presemts "Cannonball Adderley Legacy" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080 ) on Tuesday through Saturday, July 8th through 13th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. For more than forty years, drummer Louis Hayes has been a catalyst for energetic, unrelenting swing in his self led bands, as well as in those whose respective leaders reads like an encyclopedia of straight ahead post-bop modern jazz. Hayes himself an authentic architect of post-bop swing, began his professional activities at the tender age of 18. He started with tenor saxophonist, flautist and oboist Yusef Lateef who like Hayes is a Detroit native (other jazz luminaries hailing from the "motor city" include the Jones brothers, Elvin, Hank and Thad, guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Tommy Flanagan and many others). After the stint with Lateef, Hayes went on to rhythmically propel groups led by pianist Horace Silver, legendary saxophonist Cannonball Adderley and pianist Oscar Peterson. For the last twenty-plus years, Louis has led or co-led some of the most uncompromisingly swinging groups in all of jazz. Each unit has displayed tight-knit harmonic cohesion and hard-driving consistency as part of its signature. With so much activity in his past, Louis could easily rest comfortably on his laurels. But being a forward thinker and doer, Hayes operates "in the present!" His recent groups boasts some of the cream of jazz' recent crop. Saxophonist Louis Hayes posses an embarrassment of riches. His story, still being told, contains a glorious past, a vibrant present and an ever promising future. There is a $30-$40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE VAUDEVILLIANS WITH DRAG RACE FAVORITE JINKX MONSOON AT THE BEECHMAN

NYC: THE VAUDEVILLIANS WITH DRAG RACE FAVORITE JINKX MONSOON AT THE BEECHMAN

RuPaul's Drag Race favorite Jinkx Monsoon makes her New York debut at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 ) with the premiere of THE VAUDEVILLIANS, a musical comedy show co-starring composer and musician Richard Andriessen. Showtimes vary each night so see the BEECHMAN website. Throughout the 1920's Kitty Witless and Dr.Dan Von Dandy toured speakeasies and burlesque theaters through the United States as THE VAUDEVILLIANS, wowing audiences with their edgy, original music. Unfortunately, one day, tragedy struck. While touring through Antarctica, they were victims of a devastating avalanche and were buried under two tons of sleet and snow - instantly freezing them alive. But thanks to global warming, they recently thawed out only to discover, that pop artists of various decades had stolen their music and passed it off as their own. Much to their shock and chagrin, songs including "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" (which was originally about the woman's Suffragette movement), and "Drop it Like it's Hot" (which was originally about the invention of the electric iron) had become hits for lesser artists. Now, at long last, they are taking to the stage to reclaim their original music, performing it as originally composed. Tickets available throughhttps://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/922622 - plus there is a $15 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE VAUDEVILLIANS WITH DRAG RACE FAVORITE JINKX MONSOON THROUGH JULY 30th

NYC: THE VAUDEVILLIANS WITH DRAG RACE FAVORITE  JINKX MONSOON THROUGH JULY 30th

RuPaul's Drag Race favorite Jinkx Monsoon makes her New York debut at THE WEST BANK CAFE/LAURIE BEECHMAN THEATRE (407 West 42nd Street, NYC - 212-695-6909 ) with the premiere of THE VAUDEVILLIANS, a musical comedy show co-starring composer and musician Richard Andriessen. Performance begin on Tuesday, July 9th with 2 shows, at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The show continues every night through Thursday, July 18th, with additional dates on Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, July 23rd, 25th & 26th, with a final show on Tuesday, July 30th.
