AUS: LAY-LAH WAZIR - A NIGHTMARE ON HIGH STREET = SHOW CLOSES TONIGHT

AUS: LAY-LAH WAZIR - A NIGHTMARE ON HIGH STREET

Following the success of "Pyramids & Pimm's" at the 2012 Comedy Festival, character comedienne Yvonne Malik returns to the stage, as the belly dancing Bo-gyptian, Lay-lah Wazir atCOMEDY ON COLLINS (156 Collins Street, Melbourne, NSW, AUS - 9017 0104) on Wednesdays through Saturdays, April 3rd through 20th. Loudmouth Lay-lah from Lalor has a 'PhB' in belly dance and is always ready to show off her moves to anyone who asks - and everyone else as well. When she uproots her family in search of the 'Great Australian Dream' at Lalor Fortress Heights (a shiny new housing estate in Melbourne's outer north), she realises the fairytale she was sold is much more akin to a nightmare, despite having acquired all the necessities: a McMansion, hummer and several sixty inch plasmas. Directed by Russell Fletcher, Yvonne Malik is an Arabic female comedienne from the northern suburbs of Melbourne, performing at comedy venues as the one and only housing estate princess, much to the delight of her audiences. Using her original blend of cultural comedy and satire, she pokes fun at modern day excesses and the notion of 'the perfect life' on outer suburban housing estates. Be warned, this show may also include Lay-lah's artistically challenged belly dance routines! Call for cover/minimum information.

NYC: ROBERT RANDOLPH PRESENTS THE SLIDE BROTHERS

NYC: ROBERT RANDOLPH PRESENTS THE SLIDE BROTHERS

Robert Randolph Presents The Slide Brothers at IRIDIUM JAZZ CLUB (1650 Broadway, NYC - 212-582-2121) on Thursday, April 18th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The Slide Brothers are Calvin Cooke, Chuck Campbell, Darick Campbell and Aubrey Ghent the greatest living musicians who embody the Sacred Steel tradition. The joyous music these legendary artists create extends far beyond scared steel to encompass blues, rock and soul all celebrated with a sound that is uniquely their own. The pedal steel guitar was introduced to church services by Willie Eason in the 1930s. His single-string passages, which imitated the African-American singing and shouting voices, remain the signature sound of the Keith Dominion steel guitar style. The goal of a skilled steel player in church is to use the guitar to mimic voices, to 'sing' lines of the hymns and to provide praise music that pushes the congregation closer to feeling the Holy Spirit. This church-bred style of high energy electrified slide remains today an integral part of the worship service wherever the faithful gather. Despite its role in church services, this dynamic, high energy music had never been heard outside of church. As a new century dawned, rumors of an extraordinary new form of slide guitar began to attract interest among blues fans who long favored the electrified sound of slide guitar masters such as Elmore James and Duane Allman. Robert Randolph has become the most successful artist to emerge from the Sacred Steel tradition. Randolph's mission is to share the extraordinary talents of these legendary masters with audiences throughout the world. Together with Co-Producer John McDermott, Randolph has readied the group's debut album for release by Concord Records later this year. There is a $35 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.
