King is a New Orleans Grammy Award-winning musician and actor who is initially known for his audacious fusion of blues and hip-hop. King reached a whole new audience with his film debut in the Coen Brothers film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, not only appearing on the award-winning soundtrack, but establishing himself as a serious dramatic actor as well. He has been a determined progressive, hoping to reinvigorate the blues as a living African American art with a more contemporary approach and adamantly refusing to treat it as a museum piece whose "authentic" forms needed careful preservation. King eventually modified that approach to a certain degree, attempting to create a more explicit link between blues tradition and the general musical present.

When it comes to saxophonist / vocalist / composer / lyricist / arranger Grace Kelly, people seem tobe divided into two groups: those who marvel at her proficiency, creativity and ever-accelerating growth, and those who have yet to encounter the 19-year-old wunderkind. The ranks of the former category are growing by the day. Trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis was so impressed with Kelly's three-night stand as guest of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra that he invited her to join the ensemble at the Kennedy Center's Eisenhower Theater in Washington, DC. Harry Connick, Jr. heard Kelly in a master class on a December afternoon and brought her on stage to sit in with his band that night. Since then, Kelly has been voted "Best Jazz Act" in Boston three consecutive years in the FNX/Phoenix Best Music Poll, received the ASCAP Foundation's Young Jazz Composers Award in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011 and won "Jazz Artist of the Year" at the Boston Music Awards in both 2008 and 2010. When he steps off the stage, he leaves the audience begging for more. So get your holiday off to a great start and listen to some real old-time crooning. We know you'll enjoy the music. Opening for Frank, vivacious singer Lisa Small will bring her own refreshing twist to the American songbook. There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.

CABARET TONIGHT IN SF: JEFF GOLUB WITH BRIAN AUGER AT YOSHI'S

CABARET TONIGHT IN SF: JEFF GOLUB WITH BRIAN AUGER AT YOSHI'S

Contemporary jazz guitarist Jeff Golub AND jazz-rock keyboardist Brian Auger will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Thursday, August 29th at 8:00 pm, to celebrate the release of their new album 'Train Keeps A Rolling'. It's been a wild two years since guitarist Jeff Golub released his last album, "Three Kings," which paid tribute to blues legends B.B., Freddie & Albert King. As the record was released, the optic nerves in Golub's eyes inexplicably collapsed leaving him blind. Adjusting to his new life meant adopting Luke, a guide dog. While attempting to catch a New York City subway last September, Golub fell onto the tracks as a train rapidly approached. He was clipped and dragged by the train as Luke and bystanders frantically attempted to help. Miraculously Golub escaped with only minor scrapes and bruises. Undaunted and as boisterous as ever, Golub stands defiantly, toting his guitar with Luke perched at his feet, at the crossroads of train tracks on the cover of his aptly titled new album, "Train Keeps A Rolling," which was released August 13th by Entertainment One Music. For Golub's 12th solo album he teamed with British keyboard great Brian Auger for a rollicking 11-song collection of soul, jazz, blues and rock combining Golub's raw bluesy guitar licks with Auger's hallmark Hammond B-3 organ. There is a $28 cover.
