MR. FINN'S CABARET at THE SYDELLE AND LEE BLATT PERFORMING ARTS CENTER (36 Linden Street, Pittsfield, MA - 413-236-8888), part of the Barrington Stage Company (BSC), kicks off it's new season on Saturday & Sunday, June 1st (9:30 pm) & 2nd (8:00 pm) with the songwriting team who wrote The Burnt Part Boys and The Mysteries of Harris Burdick for the Musical Theatre Lab perform tunes from those shows and from their new musical Tuck Everlasting. Miller and Tysen will be joined by Jay Armstrong Johnson and Alysha Umphress from BSC's On the Town and Ben Roseberry and Barrett Wilbert Reed. Johnson was previously seen at BSC in Pool Boy (2010), Roseberry in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (2008) and Umphress in Funked Up Fairy Tales (2007). Described as equal parts James Taylor and Stephen Sondheim, Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen's songs have been performed everywhere from East Village rock clubs, to Off-Broadway theaters, to Sesame Street. Chris and Nathan have won numerous awards and grants including the Jonathan Larson, Richard Rodgers, Daryl Roth, Kitty Carlisle Hart, ASCAP, and the NEA. They began their collaboration together at NYU where they received their MFA's in musical theatre writing. Tickets are $25, general admission.
By popular demand, THE YORK THEATRE at Saint Peter's Church (619 Lexington Avenue, NYC - 212-935-5820 ext. 25) has announced the return engagement of the new musical I'm a Stranger Here Myself, written and performed by Mark Nadler, with Franca Vercelloni on accordion, Jessica Tyler Wright on vioin and directed by David Schweizer. Performances will resume on Tuesday evening, May 28th at 7:00 pm and continue through Sunday afternoon, June 9th at 2:30 pm. The heart, soul and tears of the music that helped define Broadway in its golden age was inextricably linked to a magical (and sinister) several years in pre-WWII Berlin. It was a brief period when the creative strangers of the society - poets, playwrights, Jews, gays and artists of all sorts - were embraced and even exalted. And it's this smart, sexy, jazz-fueled, booze-soaked era that the astonishing, multi-award winning entertainer Mark Nadler brings to life in I'm a Stranger Here Myself - the deeply emotional undercurrents of a society about to break itself into a million pieces. Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, May 28th through June 2nd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. History has produced its share of great artists and great people - John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues, and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band and smaller Alumni All-Star group are the direct descendants of Gillespie's musical ventures. The groups feature some of Dizzy's closest compatriots: senior statesman and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath; veteran Gillespie alumni Roy Hargrove, vocalist Roberta Gambarini, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, and Lewis Nash; and musical director John Lee. Multi-GRAMMY Award nominee, Brazilian pianist/ singer/ composer/ arranger Eliane Elias will perform atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) Tuesday through Saturday, May 28th through June 1st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Elaine is known for a distinctive musical style which blends Brazilian roots with a sensuous, alluring voice and impressive compositional and piano skills. Cuba's hottest band HAVANA D'PRIMERA will perform at YOSHI'S(1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Friday, May 31st & Saturday, June 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The band is directed by Alexander Abreu, widely recognized as the greatest trumpeter of his generation and a key part of Paulito FG's Elite during its glory years and the first call studio trumpeter for everyone from Juan Ceruto to Juan Formell to Issac Delgado. There had always been rumors of Alexander's behind-the-scenes creative contributions in the form of coros and mambos, but he's now come front and center as a dominating lead vocalist and songwriter. Tony and Olivier Award-winning actress and recording artist Lea Salonga will perform at THE CAFE CARLYLE (35 East 76th Street, NYC - 212-744-1600) on Tuesdays through Fridays, May 21st through June 8th at 8:45 pm, with late shows on Saturdays ay 10:45 pm. In August 2011 she released a live version of her 2010 concert "Lea Salonga: The Journey So Far." On Friday, May 31st at 7:00 pm, there will be an encore performance of Marc McBarron Kessler's provocative new musical play, NAKED ARCADE at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788 - ). The show features Marc McBarron Kessler as Mickey, Go Mahan as Pearl, J. Michael Reeds as John, Francesca MacAaron as Ellis The Mermaid, Andrew Loren Resto as The Killer, and Barbara Mundy as Mickey's Mother. A brief synopsis: Times Square, 1980. On a winter's eve a few weeks after the death of hustler-musician Mickey, his friends gather to remember him, taking a final tour through his life, his art, and his complicated dreams, as they struggle to find their own place in the world now that their anchor is gone. METROPOLITAN ROOM'S Sixth Annual Metrostar Talent Challenge kicks off on July 8th. The competition, which has helped launch the careers of a number of standouts in cabaret, pop and jazz, is accepting applications through July 1st. The 2013 "MetroStar Talent Challenge" runs for seven consecutive Mondays, from July 8 through August 19.Open to solo singers and vocal duos of all ages, backgrounds and styles that have not played a major engagement at the Metropolitan Room, the jury and audience-voted, elimination-round competition offers a career-boosting package of prizes and professional encouragements including a fully produced primetime Met Room engagement and live recording.
The Second Concert of the 6th Season of The Concerts for City Greens, free outdoor concert series, originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 26th at 6:30 pm (raind date: Thursday, June 27th at 6:30pm). The concets are presented free of charge and open to the public at TUDOR CITY GREENS PARK (enter at Tudor City Place between East 42nd and East 43rd Streets) with "I Feel So Much Spring," and will feature professional performers from Broadway and the New York City cabaret, jazz, classical and opera scene. Celebrating an age when radio was brand new and radio drama was stuffed with more stereotypes and cut glass accents than afternoon tea at Lords, the Fitzrovia Radio Hour use new material to recreate the spirit of vintage radio plays for a modern audience. The Fitzrovians revel in the glamour of a bygone era, from costume and performance to props. They transport audiences to their unique universe - a wonderful imagining of how commercial 1940s radio should have been done. The Fitzrovia Radio Hour lovingly satirise the casual imperialism and stiff upper lips of the period, throwing them into relief with physical comedy and a modern twist to produce a heady comic cocktail. Carlos Reyes recording artist, producer, engineer, harpist and violinist will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Thursday, May 30th at 8:00 pm. Reyes has been breaking musical barriers since his first public performance at the age of five. Born in Paraguay South America. He began his musical education at the age of three and a half on the violin. A few years later, his father, a musical and national hero in Paraguay, dared young Carlos to learn the complicated 36 string native Paraguayan harp. Being called a child prodigy at an early age, he took his father's challenge seriously. Carlos purchased his first harp for $50.00 when he was just ten years old. Two weeks later, he earned a double encore and $250.00 at his first professional harp concert. Since then he has taken the harp and its music to new and groundbreaking levels. There is a $25 cover.
