As the years went on his interest and love for the organ and music grew stronger. At 16 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records, releasing his first record "All Of Me" at 17. This record was single handedly responsible for the great resurgence of the Hammond sound in popular music. At 22, John McLaughlin called him along with drummer Dennis Chambers, to form the group the "Free Spirits". This band toured extensively for 4 years. Joey has been around the world and back dozens of times with his own trio, but also playing and recording with some of the greatest musicians in the world such as, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Frank Wess, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, John Scofield, Joe Lovano, and many more. He has won the Down Beat Critics poll eleven times & the Readers poll ever year since 2002, as well as countless Jazz Journalist awards, and countless others. In 2004 Joey was nominated for a Grammy for his record "Falling In Love Again", and again in 2010 for his release titled "Never Can Say Goodbye". Currently, Joey continues to tour with his own group, and other all-star projects. His latest release "One For Rudy" is a tribute to the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder. Kitty Skrobela of Miranda Music , as is her way, made the dream come to life, the hope realized, their wish a reality. The fascinating, eclectic mix of extraordinary songwriters on this album, like Dorothy Fields, Paul McCartney, Fred Hersch and Joni Mitchell, unwittingly collaborated on this project as the song springboard for what these two artists wished to express. Collectively, Karen and Sean have brought to life this multi-faceted, deeply felt wish with a deliciously personal perspective on life and love...as if anything else matters. BOSTON: KENNY GARRETT BAND - CD RELEASE SHOW

The Kenny Garrett Band performs at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday, January 31st with shows at 7:30 & 10:00 pm. On Pushing the World Away, Garrett continues to mature as a composer. Garrett, in turn, nods to the pianist who he had known for more than 30 years on the jaunty, upbeat and at times explosive opening track of the album, "A Side Order of Hijiki," which is decidedly not about the hijiki culinary seaweed. While not directly paying homage to the late Mulgrew Miller, Garrett does pay tribute to a number of other friends and heroes - Chick Corea, Chucho Vald's, Sonny Rollins, Donald Brown - which connects the album to Garrett's 2012 critically acclaimed gem, Seeds From The Underground. Currently, Joey continues to tour with his own group, and other all-star projects. His latest release "One For Rudy" is a tribute to the legendary recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder.
