SOME MEMORIES OF JACK WRANGLER

I led a rather sheltered life, so it wasn't until I moved to Manhattan around the age of 30 that I discovered who (and what) Jack Wrangler was. The first time I saw him was at a benefit for THE GLINES, a gay theater group run by playwright/producer John Glines. I didn't know who John Glines was either for that matter, until I was introduced to him at MARIE'S CRISIS one night a few weeks earlier. He invited me to the benefit at a club on Seventh Avenue South, and one of the guest stars was someone called Jack Wrangler. And Jack took the stage and actually auctioned off his underwear (a clean pair he had in his pocket) - and I had no idea why, since everyone assumed that everyone knew who Jack Wrangler was, and no one explained. I've learned a lot about Jack (and about life) since then.

Jack become totally involved in cabaret after meeting, dating and later marrying NYC cabaret icon Margaret Whiting, who along with Julie Wilson and a few others comprise the "Grande Dames" of the genre. And, after taking part, along with Margaret, as an instructor/Master Teacher at the EUGENE O'NEAL CABARET CONFERENCE, began directing cabaret performers. He had one signature style - always including himself in the production in some way in the show, but usually in the part of narrator or off-stage voice.

In 1999 I actually saw Jack at work, the afternoon of December 31st, in Fullerton, CA, where he was directing a huge, complicated cabaret show for a New Year's Eve party for the company I was working for at the time (it was the "millennium" and the sponsor of the show even had a huge generator on standby outside the venue, just in case the worst fears we all had as the clocks went from 1999 to 2000 came to pass). Jack was an amazing man to watch, totally in charge, full of energy, with a steady stream of ideas he added to the show to put it all together for that evening's performance. There was a high school choir, several performers (including Margaret) and all sorts of special effects (including snow falling outside the windows - in California!) and multi-media projections. And in the show Jack played the voice of a computer which carried on a conversation with one of the performers.

But the most exciting part of my trip that weekend came the following morning, at brunch. Jack and Margaret were there, as well as Shelly Markham (who actually "chauffeured" me from my hotel to the home where it was held). We all sat around the kitchen table and the stories, anecdotes (and a small bit of gossip here and there) was shared by all. It was one of those "let's do this several hours more" events that give definition to the word "unforgettable". But most of all, I could witness close up the very special relationship that bonded Jack and Margaret for so many years.

I started mentioning Jack in my prayers perhaps a year or more ago, when his illness began to really take hold and he was hospitalized. For the past several months he was in a hospice facility. I was not shocked when word came on Tuesday morning from Peter Haas that Jack Wrangler had passed away, but I was deeply saddened. My heart went out especially to Margaret.

Jack asked that there be no funeral, but his friends are already beginning to make plans for a celebration of his life to be held shortly. And who knows, maybe Jack will find a way - if not as an off-stage voice, at least as an off-stage presence - to take part in the event.

NYC: ALGONQUIN SALON THIS SUNDAY: MIRACLES!

Mark Janas' Algonquin Salon usually takes place on Sunday nights from 7:00 to 10:00 pm in the lobby of THE ALGONQUIN HOTEL (59 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-419-9331 - ). The Salon is a weekly event in which singers, writers and musicians share their talent with each other and audience members in the lobby of the Algonquin Hotel, an informal, yet elegant setting with a grand tradition of artists gathering to socialize. There is no cover and no minimum. Salon Secretary Peter Napolitano reports that on Sunday, April 12th, the special theme will be "MIRACLES!", co-hosted by that irrepressible Salon favorite Tanya Moberly. In honor of both Easter Sunday and Passover, we'll be celebrating "a hundred million miracles", both large and small.  It could be the miracle of love or spring, of a child's first step or a dying man's redemption, or anything that strikes you as being "miraculous". Remember, any material, on or off-theme, is always welcome at the Algonquin Salon.

A BUNCH OF HOLIDAYS BUNCH TOGETHER THIS WEEK

Please remember that this is both Passover and Easter time and there will be many schedule changes - and at times traffic problems (here in NYC, the annual Easter Parade on Sunday the 12th is one example). Be sure to phone ahead to if you plan to visit a venue or restaurant to make reservations and check for any cancelled events.

Trudi Mann has already let us know that BUTTERFIELD EIGHT RESTAURANT (5 East 38th Street, NYC), where she holds her Sunday Brunch events each week has already announced they will be closed on Sunday the 12th.

SOME NEWS - SOME GOOD - SOME SAD

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Dolores Peterson out in LA - she celebrated it with a birthday show.

And there is a birthday coming up on the 10th that is very important: jazz icon Barbara Lea will turn 80 on Friday. Congratulations! Send her a birthday card or an e-mail if you have a chance - I know that it will be truly appreciated.

SPECIAL SYMPATHY goes out to cabaret singer (but also great cabaret fan - sees just about every show) Stephanie Zagoren, who's father passed away (at age 101) over the weekend.

SAD NEWS - JACK WRANGLER HAS DIED

Jack Wrangler, musical theater producer and director, who had been a child television actor and then star of more than 85 pornographic films, died on the morning of April 7th. He was the husband of recording star Margaret Whiting. Jack was co-producer of the cabaret, Dream, which featured songs of Johnny Mercer and included Margaret Whiting in the cast, and wrote and produced several theater works, including Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Margaret's daughter has asked that people NOT try to contact Margaret until at least Thursday, to give her time to come to terms with Jack's death. Memorial / funeral arrangements are not yet finalized.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MAC AWARD NOMINEES!

Congratulations on your 2009 MAC AWARD NOMINATION - placing you in the select few in your category chosen by the MAC membership. You have every reason to be proud today!

There is one more step in the process, and that is the final ballot. And, as one of the few in your category, it is important that the MAC voters are fully aware of your talents, your accomplishments and your qualifications to be among that chosen few.

If you have a special cabaret event or show that will help the voters get more familiar with your work - especially those who did not see your event in 2008, getting the word out is most vital. You see, MAC voters may only vote for performers who's shows they have actually seen. A workshop or a showcase that only presents a sample of your work isn't really enough.

And the problem is, the final ballots are just now going out and are to be completed and returned in a very short time. That's where CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE stands ready to help.

Please send me an e-mail press release (with your latest jpg headshot) concerning any cabaret events you have planned to help introduce the MAC voters to you and your work. I can get the word out quickly - not just to a few hundred MAC voters, but to all 2700 free subscribers to our twice-weekly newsletter and our 6300 page website - visited by as many as 6000 readers each day. Our next issue goes out this Thursday, April 9th.

Plus, if you run an ad on the CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website (available for as little as $25 per week) your event gets mentioned in EVERY ISSUE while you ad is running! Drop me a line for details. We can have your ad up and running in 48 hours or less. (Space is limited - 2-week minimum on all ads).

CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE has been promoting the art and the artists of cabaret since 1990 - on the internet since 1997. Our purpose is to promote and publicize folks like you - especially these days when publications cover cabaret less and less.

Congratulations once more - and please, take advantage of the many ways we can tell folks about you - our newsletter, our CABARET HOTLINE ONLINE website, our BLOG and even our Mobile Website - for folks with iPhones! .

We're ready to serve.

STU HAMSTRA

PS: A flier or a jpg of a flier is NOT a press release.

TWIT SONG OF THE DAY STARTS ON WEDNESDAY

Starting Wednesday, April 8th, I will post a "Twit-Song of the Day" to all my "followers" on TWITTER.

Reaching into my iTunes file of about 6000 songs (I have dozens of CDs not loaded into my iTunes library - another project to be undertaken), and check on the 100 or so MEMBER CDs posted on my website, and then comparing them to the list of CDs available on iTunes, I will post one song (not a full CD) on TWITTER with it's iTunes link as a purchase suggestions (most songs cost just 99 cents on iTunes) with a link to the song on iTunes.

Now one a day means 365 picks a year - a daunting task - so if your are following me on TWITTER, I ask your help. TWITTER me your suggestion of a song from a cabaret CD - available on iTunes (one per person, please). If I have it in my library or in my CD collection that I can load into my library, I will check it out and if I like it, include it as one of my daily picks.

Remember, this is a TWITTER only project - you can sign up for a TWITTER account for free, there is no cost (and no ads). Just go to my account (http://twitter.com/stuhamstra ), use the "join" button on the opening screen and sign on as a "follower" - and I in turn will "follow you".

I already made my first 4 CD choices - first on goes up later Wednesday - (because of problems with the TWITTER website we postponed this for 2 days). Please don't send suggestions by e-mail - I get so many e-mails a day I don't know where to turn. And one suggestion per person please.

TWITTER PROBLEMS ON MONDAY - ALL FIXED NOW APPARENTLY

TWITTER apparently had a problem with their website yesterday (Monday, April 6th) and many folks were unable to access the site - or even post new "twits" - if you tried to sign on to become a follower in order to receive our "Cabaret CD Song of the Day" twits, please try again - just go to http://twitter.com/stuhamstra and click on the follow button.

If you are not yet a member of TWITTER you will be first presented with a form to become a member - it is simple and it is free. All that is required is a User Name (need not be your real name) and a password. Its a great networking tool - to be used wisely, of course.
