NYC: THE BIRDLAND JAZZ PARTY FEATURING VOCALIST GABRIELLE STRAVELLI

The Birdland Jazz Party will feature award-winning vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli on Sunday, November 2nd at 6:00 pm at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080). Her special guest is the award winning singer/ songwriter/ pianist Billy Styritch. Gabrielle Stravelli has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her unique take on material from the new American songbook, as well as classic standards by artists as varied as Pink Floyd and Duke Ellington, Dolly Parton and Johnny Mercer. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric. Gabrielle began singing as a soloist with orchestras at the age of 15 and has since performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York including Carnegie Hall, the Hammerstein Ballroom, the Iridium Jazz Club, BB King Blues Club, Birdland Jazz Club, The Garage, Comix, the Fulton Theatre, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center where she opened for Esperanza Spalding and Cassandra Wilson. She has appeared as a soloist with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops, sang the role of Anita in West Side Story with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra and performed the role of Jeannie in the European tour of HAIR. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum. 

NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER AT THE BLUE NOTE

The Manhattan Transfer will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, November 6th through 9th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Founded by Tim Hauser - who passed away on October 16th - in 1964 with Gene Pistilli, Marty Nelson, Erin Dickins and Pat Rosalia, the Manhattan Transfer recorded one album, but because of differences in musical tastes this grouping disolved in just a few years. Tim reformed the group in 1972, this time with Laurel Masse, Janis Siegel and Alan Paul. Cheryl Bentyne joined The Manhattan Transfer in 1979, replacing Laurel. With worldwide sales in the millions, Grammy Awards by the dozen, and veterans of sold-out world tours, The Manhattan Transfer has continued to record and tour and will continue to do so. There is a $40-$50 cover.

NYC: CHRISTIAN TAMBURR & FRIENDS: CELEBRATING BOBBY HUTCHERSON

Christian Tamburr leads a celebration of all-time vibraphone great Bobby Hutcherson on Friday through Sunday, November 7th through 9th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595). Coinciding with Jazz at Lincoln Center's "Bobby Hutcherson: Life of a Legend" performances in The Appel Room, this high-profile group joins forces to celebrate a living legend whose playing has touched younger musicians throughout the jazz world. With special guest vibraphonists and a core band featuring Aaron Goldberg, Yasushi Nakamura, Mark Whitfield, and Stacy Dillard, this group is well-equipped to play material from throughout Hutcherson's career as well as their own compositions inspired by it. There is a $35-$45 cover.
