SOMERVILLE, MA: A GARLAND FOR JUDY! A CABARET CELEBRATION OF THE JUDY GARLAND SONGBOOK
A Garland for Judy! A Cabaret Celebration of the Judy Garland Songbook will be presented at ARMORY CENTER FOR THE ARTS (191 Highland Avenue, Somerville, MA - 617-718-2191)on Friday, November 14th at 8:00 pm as part one of a 2-part Garland Gala Weekend. The show brings together four outstanding Boston vocalists: Lynda D'Amour, Pamela Enders, Jinny Sagorin, and Randy Zinkus, in company with musical director Tom LaMark performing musical highlights from Judy's film, television, recording, radio, and concert careers. The show will be hosted by special guest performer John Fricke, the world's preeminent Garland and Wizard of Oz author/ documentarian. There is a $30 cover for 1 show - combo package of both shows $50.
BOSTON: YELLOWJACKETS AT SCULLERS
The acclaimed jazz group Yellowjackets will perform at SCULLERS JAZZ CLUB (400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111)on Friday & Saturday, November 14th & 15th at 8:00 pm. Their latest CD "A Rise In The Road" (2013), the Yellowjackets' second Mack Avenue Records offering, is indeed an appropriate title for a time-honored jazz ensemble that has never been fearful of facing newer musical horizons, not to mention the myriad challenges of life itself. BOSTON: DIZZY GILLESPIE ALL-STARS AT THE REGETTABAR
The Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Friday, November 14th at 7:30 pm. The band features Freddy Hendrix, Trumpet; Mark Gross, Alto Sax; Dave Stryker, guitar; Jeb Patton, piano; John Lee, bass; and Tommy Campbell, drums. History has produced its share of great artists and great people - John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. Officially authorized by Lorraine Gillespie, and under the leadership of Dizzy's long-time bassist John Lee, a selection of ensembles of varying sizes were formed, featuring many of the wide variety of musicians who worked with Dizzy plus some newer talents from the jazz scene. Together they are working to continue the legacy of both the music and the personality of this great jazz master who had such a profound impact on twentieth century music. There is a $28 cover.
TORONTO: JAZZ BISTRO YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: PATRICK HEWAN
Patrick Hewan, a rising star in the Toronto Jazz scene, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299)on Friday, November 14th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. Patrick's energetic virtuosic playing captivates and moves his audiences. He draws on the vast vocabulary of the legendary jazz pianists who came before him and adds his own spirit and passion to create a unique sound and style. Drawing heavily on influences such as: Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Hiromi Uehara, Oscar Peterson, and Phineas Newborn while studying under the tutelage of legendary pianists such as Mark Eisenman, Brian Dickesnon, Richard Whiteman, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duran it's no secret where Patrick developed his unique, high-octane style that still clearly adheres to the art forms tradition.
