NYC: THE JAZZ MASTERS QUARTET AT BIRDLAND
Four of the leading instrumentalists in jazz come together as "The Masters Quartet" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, July 29th through August 2nd with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Saxophonist Dave Liebman, a 2010 "NEA Jazz Master," learned directly from jazz icons, spending extensive periods as a member of groups led by Miles Davis and Elvin Jones. As a leader, Liebman has been associated since 1970 with a succession of extraordinary groups from Open Sky Trio to Lookout Farm to Quest, each of which has framed a distinct phase of his musical evolution. Master bassist Buster Williams is an empathetic sideman known for his subtle sense of swing. He began his professional career in 1960 with saxophonist Jimmy Heath, going on to play with jazz legends Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Mary Lou Williams, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and many others. Legendary drummer Billy Hart has been a fixture on the jazz scene for over fifty years, performing and recording along the way with jazz legends Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. Newest addition to the group, pianist Billy Childs, apprenticed with jazz legends Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson in the 1970s and 80s before striking out on a solo career that would find him deftly melding the worlds of jazz and classical music and earning 10 Grammy nominations and 3 Grammy awards. Along the way, Childs has collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Kronos Quartet, Wynton Marsalis and Chris Botti. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA
THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday, July 31st through Sunday, August 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. In the history of Jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for nearly 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James "Count" Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world Royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and concert hall in the world. Some of the greatest soloists, composers, arrangers, and vocalists in jazz history such as Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sonny Payne, Freddie Green, Snooky Young, Frank Wess, and Joe Williams, became international stars once they began working with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. This great 18 member orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, is still continuing the excellent history started by Basie of stomping and shouting the blues, as well as refining those musical particulars that allow for the deepest and most moving of swing. There is a $20-$35 cover.
