WASHINGTON, DC: MARIANNE MATHENY-KATZ AT BLUES ALLEY

Jazz vocalist Marianne Matheny-Katz will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Wednesday, July 30th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The jazz maven has clocked untold hours at the microphone since her early years as a New York folksinger. In the 1990s she leapt onto the blues scene. She entered the millennium as an award-winning jazz singer, twice taking second place in the prestigious Billy Holiday Jazz competition in Baltimore. Marianne Matheny-Katz has been featured at festivals such as Artscape, the Baltimore Blues Festival, Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival, East Coast Jazz Festival and New Jersey Jazz Festival. She has graced the stages of numerous clubs and concert halls. With her new album Somewhere in Paradise,•the songstress has built a substantial set for the sophisticated ear, dressing beloved jazz tunes in new and noteworthy arrangements. Released in May, the album is receiving national airplay and garnering great reviews. Call for cover/minimum information.

BETHESDA, MD: GIRMA YIFRASHEWA, ETHIOPIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC

BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) presents a rare North American appearance by Ethiopian pianist and composer Girma Yifrashewa. Born 1967 in Addis Ababa, Girma Yifrashewa combines the ecstasy of Ethiopian harmony with the grandeur of virtuoso piano technique into an effortlessly enjoyable mixture. Trained in Bulgarian conservatory, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Hochschule fur Music Und Theater in Leipzig as a highly accomplished performer of classical repertoire, Yifrashewa has chosen to remain in Ethiopia, helping to forge a classical tradition for his country. Currently Yifrashewa works to promote Ethiopian and Classical Music by touring throughout Africa and Europe. He is celebrating his North American debut album, Love and Peace (Unseen Worlds), this July. There is a $15 cover.
