NYC: JAZZ IN JULY AT THE 92nd ST Y - I WON'T DANCE: THE FRED ASTAIRE SONGBOOK

The 92nd ST Y (1395 Lexington Avenue, NYC - 212-415-5500) presents JAZZ IN JULY, running from Tuesday, July 22nd through Thursday, July 31st. Featuring the sounds of Hoagy Carmichael, Leonard Bernstein, Miles Davis, Dick Hyman, Sarah Vaughan and Fred Astaire. Celebrate Bill Charlap's 10th anniversary as Artistic Director as he returns with more than three dozen world-class jazz artists to celebrate the 30th annual Jazz in July Festival. What better reason to stay in the city for the summer than to hear Jazz in July founder Dick Hyman plus beloved jazz greats Jimmy Greene, Jeremy Pelt, Ken Peplowski and more! Fred Astaire proved to be a jazz master, using his innate sense of rhythm and swing to collaborate with songwriting legends. NYC: JAMES BRANDON LEWIS "DIVINE TRAVELS" CD RELEASE CELEBRATION

James Brandon Lewis will hold his "Divine Travels" CD Release Celebration atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Thursday, July 31st at 6:00 pm. It takes considerable confidence and courage for a young musician to match wits with veteran improvisers like William Parker and Gerald Cleaver. But on his second CD release, Divine Travels, saxophonist James Brandon Lewis does just that, not only holding his own with that masterful rhythm section but leading them down fresh and unexpected pathways. Divine Travels melds the holy spirit of a gospel service with the fiery expression of free jazz, the intuitive dialogue of skilled improvisers with the stunning invention of a first meeting. Lewis' music draws in equal parts on his considerable studies and his roots in the church, as well as his considerable curiosity to discover more and deeper connections within his music.There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE JAZZ MASTERS QUARTET AT BIRDLAND

Four of the leading instrumentalists in jazz come together as "The Masters Quartet" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, July 29th through August 2nd with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Saxophonist Dave Liebman, a 2010 "NEA Jazz Master," learned directly from jazz icons, spending extensive periods as a member of groups led by Miles Davis and Elvin Jones. As a leader, Liebman has been associated since 1970 with a succession of extraordinary groups from Open Sky Trio to Lookout Farm to Quest, each of which has framed a distinct phase of his musical evolution. Master bassist Buster Williams is an empathetic sideman known for his subtle sense of swing. He began his professional career in 1960 with saxophonist Jimmy Heath, going on to play with jazz legends Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Mary Lou Williams, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon and many others. Legendary drummer Billy Hart has been a fixture on the jazz scene for over fifty years, performing and recording along the way with jazz legends Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. Newest addition to the group, pianist Billy Childs, apprenticed with jazz legends Freddie Hubbard and J.J. Johnson in the 1970s and 80s before striking out on a solo career that would find him deftly melding the worlds of jazz and classical music and earning 10 Grammy nominations and 3 Grammy awards. Along the way, Childs has collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Sting, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Kronos Quartet, Wynton Marsalis and Chris Botti. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA

THE LEGENDARY COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday, July 31st through Sunday, August 3rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. In the history of Jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for nearly 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James "Count" Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world Royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and concert hall in the world. Some of the greatest soloists, composers, arrangers, and vocalists in jazz history such as Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sonny Payne, Freddie Green, Snooky Young, Frank Wess, and Joe Williams, became international stars once they began working with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. This great 18 member orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, is still continuing the excellent history started by Basie of stomping and shouting the blues, as well as refining those musical particulars that allow for the deepest and most moving of swing. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: WILLIE JONES III SEXTET AT DIZZY'S

The Willie Jones III Sextet (With Willie Jones III, drums; Eddie Henderson, trumpet; Eric Reed, piano; Stacy Dillard, tenor saxophone; Steve Davis, trombone; and Dezron Douglas, bass) will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Thursday through Sunday, July 31st through August 3rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Known for his distinct style of rhythmic expression, drummer Willie Jones III is one of the world's top jazz drummers. As a leader, Jones has five critically acclaimed albums under his belt and can also be heard on Arturo Sandoval's GRAMMY Award-winning release Hot House and Kurt Elling's GRAMMY Award-nominated Night Moves. As a sideman, he's held long tenures in bands led by Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, and Cedar Walton. Jones' repertoire will include hard bop selections, the Cedar Walton songbook, and the debut of original tunes. There is a $40-$45 cover.
