BOSTON: JULIA & THE ZEROUNIAN ENSEMBLE AT THE REGATTABAR
The inimitable song-stylist Julia and the Zerounian Ensemble will perform familiar and exotic songs from around the world at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757) on Thursday, May 1st at 7:30 pm. Julia will be singing French, Italian, Armenian, Russian, Persian, Yiddish and Latin tunes in addition to American Songbook classics, with her husband pianist Sarkis Zerounian leading the versatile and talented ensemble of musicians, 2012 Naumburg Competition winner Tessa Lark on violin, Goran Daskalov from Macedonia on accordion and saxophone, Scott Fitzsimmons on bass and Grant Smith on percussion. With her gorgeous and evocative voice she transcends language and culture to express the music inherent in any language and culture. With a worldwide repertoire of songs, Julia and her ensemble deliver an exciting musical experience with equal parts conviction, authority and heart. BOSTON: STRUNZ & FARAH AT SCULLERS
Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah will perform atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Thursday, May 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Performing together since 1979, Strunz & Farah are the innovators of an entirely new expression for the acoustic guitar. Well ahead of their time they created an original style that now is widely influential. Originally from Costa Rica and Iran respectively, Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah have brought the musical influences of their native lands into their highly virtuosic, rhythmic, and improvisation-rich original instrumental compositions, inspiring fans and many guitarists worldwide. Their meeting in 1979 in Los Angeles, where they are still based, marked the first time that Latin American and Middle Eastern music, along with other important elements, came together on the guitar. TORONTO: RUDY SMITH QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
Port of Spain, Trinidad native Rudy Smith will perform atTHE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, May 1st through 3rd at 9:00 pm. Smith played his first pan at age six. Largely self-taught, as a teenager he witnesssed and heard some of the greatest pan players: Dudley Smith, Evris Barquain, Theo Stephens, Neville Jules, Spree Simon, Ernest Ferreira, Emanuel Jack Riley, Belgrave Bonaparte, Eamon Thorpe, Gerald Forsythe, Alfred "Sack" Mayers and many many more in my hall of steel pan heroes. These artists had a profound effect on Smith's aspirations. He perfected his unique style by studying jazz luminaries: Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Oscar Peterson and John Coltrane. Mr. Smith has toured internationally and has performed at some of the major clubs and jazz festivals in the USA, Canada, Europe and the Caribbean. In a career spanning six decades, alto steel pan player Rudy Smith has built a reputation exploring and bridging the world of jazz with his native instrument, the steel pan, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded with many jazz musicians and artists from almost every corner of the musical universe. There is a $15-$20 cover.
