TONIGHT'S CABARET PICK - MANHATTAN: BILL SOLLY WITH SIMON MULLIGAN AT DON'T TELL MAMA
Bill Solly, a writer of songs and musicals that hardly anyone's ever heard of, will perform at DON'T TELL MAMA (343 West 46th Street, NYC - 212-757-0788) on Monday, February 17th; Friday, February 21st; and Monday, March 3rd, all shows at 7:00 pm. Billy has nevertheless had an interesting life, full of songs and stories about his adventures in Canada, London, New York and Los Angeles, and he can't wait to tell about them. He will be joined by the distinguished pianist Simon Mulligan and guest artists will be Carl Anthony Tramon (February 17th & March 3rd) and Elizabeth Inghram (February 21st & March 3rd). In Canada he contributed to My Fur Lady, Jubilee, Spring Thaw, Clap Hands, and many CBC radio and TV shows, but his focus was always musicals. Let the Piper Come, one of his first, was based on L.M. Montgomery's Rainbow Valley; then there was a big musical about the St. Lawrence Seaway called Strawberry that almost - but didn't happen. In England for fifteen years, Solly wrote for Maurice Chevalier, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Annie Ross, Danny La Rue, Marty Feldman, Matt Monro, Brigitte Bardot, Max Bygraves and George Burns, collaborated with Charles Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg and Denis King, and had five (now six) productions in the West End: Sweet William, Ad Lib, Queen Passionella and the Sleeping Beauty, Danny La Rue at the Palace and The Great American Backstage Musical. The latter (book with Donald Ward) originated in Los Angeles. Also with Ward Solly has had six other musicals in New York including the 1975 Off Broadway hit Boy Meets Boy, recently premiered in London with great success. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
