BOSTON: JUSSI REIJONEN: UN AT REGATTABAR

Reijonen's original music draws from a wide pool of influences and experiences gathered growing up in five different countries on three different continents; in both his original compositions and his playing, the open spaces and silences of Scandinavia effortlessly rub shoulders with the maqamat of the Arab world and the rhythmic richness of India and West Africa, creating a truly enchanting musical mosaic. The night will open with Franco-American, New World jazz guitarist and composer Alex Martin, strongly influenced by the Brazilian tradition. Alex's set will focus on the Brazilian-flavored pieces in his repertoire, presenting a baiao and forro flavor (associated with Northeast Brazil). He'll be including some standards from that repertoire as well as some of his own compositions. Alex has released two CD's to date; Second Life (2010) and Nostalgia for Terra Incognita (2007), receiving wonderful reviews from satisfied fans across the country as well as from local radio stations such as WPFW in Washington D.C. For the second portion of the evening, Brazilian Jazz vocalist Emy Tseng will be focusing on bossa nova and samba (more associated with Rio de Janeiro). She leaves an inimitable, personal impression on an exciting collection of tunes, exploring the works of Brazil's most sophisticated composers; singing in both Portuguese and English.
