MANHATTAN: BILLY HART QUARTET "ONE IS THE OTHER" CD RELEASE
The Billy Hart Quartet (Billy Hart, drums with Ethan Iverson on piano, Mark Turner on sax & Ben Street on bass) will perform at BIRDLAND(315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, March 4th through 8th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Legendary drummer Billy Hart has been a fixture on the jazz scene for over fifty years, performing and recording along the way with jazz legends Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and Miles Davis. At Birdland Hart celebrates the release of the first ECM recording of the quartet formed in 2003. Since the group's 2005 CD for hard-bop label High Note landed on many critics' best-of-the year lists, the ensemble's music has gotten more free and spacious. All of the members contribute material including a modern blues, a Coltrane tribute and an Iverson-penned homage to Paul Bley, the wonderfully-titled "Nostalgia for the Impossible.". There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
MANHATTAN: DONALD HARRISON, RON CARTER, BILLY COBHAM TRIO
The hard-swinging trio of Donald Harrison (sax), Ron Carter (bass), and Billy Cobham (drums) will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592 ) on Tuesday through Sunday, March 4th through 9th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The trio first demonstrated its strong chemistry and affinity for standards on its 2004 recording, Heroes. In April 2005, Half Note Records captured the trio live during a week-long series of shows at the Blue Note, producing the album New York Cool (2005). Half Note again recorded the trio in action at the club last year, releasing the album This is Jazz near the end of 2011. This week at the Blue Note, the band looks build on last year's musical achievements with another hotly-anticipated residency.
MANHATTAN: CARNIVAL CARAVAN: FROM RECIFE TO NEW ORLEANS
Carnival Caravan: From Recife to New Orleans with the American-Brazilian collective Nation Beat will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Tuesday, March 4th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The American/Brazilian collective Nation Beat plays a 21st century fusion inspired by Brazilian maracatu drumming, New Orleans second line rhythms, funk, and country blues. They describe themselves as "rhythm gatherers" who harvest "500 years of cultural crossbreeding" between the northeast of Brazil and southern United States. For their Fat Tuesday show at Dizzy's, Nation Beat will present a special program that celebrates Carnival and Mardi Gras by teasing out the musical connections between New Orleans and Brazilian Carnival traditions. Expect a high-energy show heavy on horns, percussion, and infectious rhythms that will get you moving! With Scott Ketter, drums/percussion; Fabiana Masili, vocals; Mark Marshall, guitar; Ze Grey, bass; Aaron Shafer-Haiss, percussion; and special guests Brian Drye, trombone, and Petr Cancura, tenor saxophone. There is a $35 cover.
