BOSTON: REVOLUTIONARY SNAKE ENSEMBLE MARDI GRAS SHOW & LIVE SNAKES CD RELEASE PARTY
The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble Mardi Gras show & Live Snakes CD Release Party with special guest, Charles Neville, will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 4th at 7:30 pm at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757). Formed in 1991, the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble is a funk & street beat improvisational brass band performing a unique blend of original and traditional music. Leader Ken Field is a longtime member of the acclaimed modern music ensemble Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, and an active composer and performer. In addition to guest Charles Neville, the band will include Jerry Sabatini - trumpet, Ken Field - sax, Tom Hall - sax, Dave Harris - trombone & tuba, Phil Neighbors - drums, and Blake Newman - bass. This Mardi Gras show will also mark the release on Accurate Records of "Live Snakes", the group's 3rd CD, and their first in over 5 years. "Live Snakes" features new and traditional material (and some remixes) from live performances in NYC and Boston in 2011 and 2013, with several prominent guest musicians. There is a $20 cover.
D.C.: KIDZ EXPRESS FUND RAISER WITH THE CHICAGO SMOOTH JAZZ ALL STARS
Kidz Express will hold a Fund Raiser at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Tuesday, March 4th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. The show will present The Chicago Smooth Jazz All Stars featuring: Fred Simon (Piano), Dave Onderdonk (Guitar), Paul Merar (Bass) & Jim Hines (Drums). Kidz Express is a not-for-profit organization providing holistic solutions to the urban challenges of South Austin by building a continuum of community support to strengthen family economic security and foster positive youth development. They serve some of the most at-risk children, youth and families in one of the nation's most underserved urban environments - the South Austin community on the West Side of Chicago. D.C.: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: THAD WILSON QUINTET
The Thad Wilson Quintet will take over as "Artist in Residence" at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800) every Tuesday night with performances at 7:00 & 8:30 pm. One need not dig too deep into our areas jazz scene before coming across the name Thad Wilson. Since coming to D.C. in 1997, Wilson has become a mainstay in the jazz clubs of U Street and beyond by consistently performing with passion, intensity, and consummate artistry in a variety of settings. In addition to his own considerable abilities, his groups feature some of the finest players in the D.C. area. His worldwide appearances include Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia; Paris, France; Antigua, Guatemala; Puebla and Mexico City, Mexico; the D.C. Jazz Festival; Atlanta Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival and many other cities around the world. In 2003, Thad performed his original suite, Reflections on Romare, at the National Gallery of Art's Romare Bearden exhibition opening in 2005. In 2006 and 2007, he served as Program Director for The National Gallery of Art's Jazz in the Garden summer concert series.In 2008, Thad went on the road with the musical production, Ella, which chronicled the life and times of Ella Fitzgerald. He played the role of Donnie and was featured in the play performing a musical impression of Louis Armstrong. Currently, in addition to composing and touring, Thad teaches Jazz Studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. There is a $15 cover.
MARYLAND: MARDI GRAS WITH THE CRAWDADDIES
East Coast's number one Roots Rock and Mardi Gras party band The Crawdaddies will perform at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Tuesday, March 4th at 8:00 pm. The Crawdaddies infuse Cajun, Zydeco, Blues, Roots Rock and Reggae into an incomparable, groove-laden sound that is unquestionably its own. The Crawdaddies have toured the USA extensively and are a regular fixture on the national college, festival, and theater circuits. The band's high-energy live show has earned them performance spots at numerous festivals nationwide with Dr. John, the Neville Brothers Mardi Gras Mambo tour, Etta James, Buckwheat Zydeco and a featured performance on PBS program "Jubilee" syndicated nationwide. The Crawdaddies' songwriting has been recognized by numerous industry awards and song "Cuttin' the Body Loose" was a finalist in the 2010 New Orleans Songwriters Festival!
