TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: CYNTHIA TAURO

Cynthia Tauro, the youngest in a musical family, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, July 22nd at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist Series. She has played piano since the age of three. At the age of twelve she sang "Over the Rainbow" with none other than Bernie Senensky on piano (broadcast by York University 105.5 FM). Classically trained at first, she began to specialize in jazz in high school. In the fall she will enter her third year in the Jazz Performance Program at Carleton University where she studies piano with Mark Ferguson. She also continues to work with Frank Falco in Toronto, where Robi Botos is among her earlier teachers and mentors. This past year Cynthia was the lead pianist in the Carleton University Jazz Band and this summer will be the coordinator of the Carleton University Jazz Camp. There is no cover.

TORONTO: EMILY STEINWALL AND THE LUAN PHUNG DUO

Saxophonist Emily Steinwall will perform, along with the Luan Phung Duo, at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Tuesday, July 22nd at 8:00 pm with sets to 12:30 am. Emily was born in Toronto in 1995, and is currently in her first year at Humber College working towards a Bachelors degree in Music Performance. She is a graduate of Malvern Collegiate Institute, where she first tried the saxophone. During her last two years of high school, Emily participated in the Humber College Community School and Honour Combo Programs. She was also a member of the the JazzFM Youth Big Band and Musicfest Canada's National Honour Combo. Luan Phung (born 1991in London, England) is a Toronto based improviser, composer, guitarist, and teacher/clinician who works in a broad spectrum of musical idioms. Though his improvisational and compositional approach is often described as "complex" and "modern" his conception is deeply rooted in the classical and jazz tradition. His distinct music reflects his reverence of jazz artists such as Lester Young, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, and John Coltrane, as well as composers such as J.S. Bach, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Olivier Messiaen, and Pierre Boulez. There is a $5 cover.
