NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH WITH GABRIELLE STRAVELLI

Bistro Award winning vocalist, Gabrielle Stravelli, returns with her Sunday Jazz Brunch on August 11th at LE PESCADEUX (90 Thompson Street, NYC - 212-966-0021), a French restaurant in the heart of Soho. They will play three sets from 12:30 to 4:00 pm. She will be joined by Saul Rubin on guitar and Pat O'Leary on bass in this charming boite that offers a great, well-priced menu and cozy atmosphere. Award-winning vocalist Gabrielle Stravelli has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her unique take on material from the new American songbook as well as classic standards by artists as varied as Pink Floyd and Duke Ellington, Dolly Parton and Johnny Mercer. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric. Gabrielle has performed on stages from Amsterdam to New York including Carnegie Hall, Iridium Jazz Club, Birdland, and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Reservations are strongly suggested. NYC: SUNDAY JAZZ BRUNCH: HENDRIK MEURKENS

Hendrik Meurkens, a virtuoso on both the chromatic harmonica and the vibraphone, will perform atTHE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Sunday, July 20th at 11:30 & 1:30 pm as part of the club's Sunday Jazz Brunch series. Hendrik is the most important jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. German-born but now based in New York, Meurkens' recordings and performances garner worldwide acclaim because the transcendent beauty of his music has universal appeal. A two-mallet player in the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, Hendrik Meurkens was en-route to being an instantly recognizable vibraphonist when he heard Toots Thielemans. Inspired by the sound of Thielemans' harmonica, he taught himself the difficult-to-master instrument. Hendrik Meurkens' other life-changing musical experience was his introduction to samba and bossa nova. He was so moved by Brazilian music that after perfecting his unique musical voice at Berklee, as a vibraphone major, he moved to Rio in the early 80s to totally immerse himself in music and culture of Brazil. TORONTO: YOUNG ARTIST BRUNCH SERIES: NICK ARSENEAU / PATRICK HEWAN DUO

Nick Arseneau (bass) and Patrick Hewan (piano) will perform on Sunday, July 20th with sets from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299). Nick Arseneau is a young up-and-coming jazz bassist, currently finishing his final year of jazz studies at York University. As both a talented performer and a high-achieving student, Nick was awarded the Mary Alice Stuart scholarship through JazzFM91 this past summer, and also performs regularly throughout Southern Ontario in a wide variety of groups from jazz to classical to rock and folk. Patrick Hewan is a rising star in the Toronto Jazz scene who's energetic virtuosic playing captivates and moves his audiences. He draws on the vast vocabulary of the legendary jazz pianists who came before him and adds his own spirit and passion to create a unique sound and style. Drawing heavily on influences such as: Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Hiromi Uehara, Oscar Peterson, and Phineas Newborn while studying under the tutelage of legendary pianists such as Mark Eisenman, Brian Dickesnon, Richard Whiteman, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duran it's no secret where Patrick developed his unique, high-octane style that still clearly adheres to the art forms tradition.
