NYC: THE PHANTOM BAND: CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF JOE HENDERSON

Canadian born pianist, Renee Rosnes, one of the premier pianists and composers of her generation, presents The Phantom Band: Celebrating the Music of Joe Henderson at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080)on Tuesday through Saturday, November 18th through 22nd with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. She is joined by Randy Brecker (trumpet), Jimmy Greene (saxes), Al Foster (drums) and George Mraz (bass). Shortly after relocating from Vancouver to New York in 1986, Rosnes quickly established a reputation as a major talent. She has recorded and toured with a veritable "who's who" of jazz, being the pianist of choice for legendary musicians such as Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, JJ Johnson, Buster Williams and Bobby Hutcherson. In 2012, she produced Joe Henderson's 75th Birthday Celebration for Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room, which featured Bobby Hutcherson, Chris Potter and Robert Hurst among others. Rosnes has released a series of 12 albums, four of which have garnered Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy. Her recordings reveal her to be both a powerful and sensitive musician, with a huge range. Rosnes also frequently performs with her husband, acclaimed pianist Bill Charlap, and the couple released their first duo recording in 2010, Double Portrait (Blue Note). There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: DAVID SANBORN AT THE BLUE NOTE

Renowned and revered the world over as one of the greatest saxophone players of all time, David Sanborn will perform at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Thursday through Sunday, November 20th through 23rd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Sanborn is an artist whose music has inspired countless other musicians while creating a body of work that spans the genres of rock 'n' roll, R&B, pop, and jazz. A naturally gifted performer, Sanborn has helped define the saxophone's modern sound while influencing a generation. Throughout the '90s, '00s, and into the present, Sanborn has continued to tour and record, having amassed a wide and enthusiastic fan base around the world. Recent albums like Dreaming Girl (2008), Here & Gone (2008), and Only Everything (2010) reflect the essence of an artist at peace with his own sound and development, yet still hungry - eager to explore the possibilities of his instrument and his abilities. NYC: ERIC REED TRIO & SPECIAL GUESTS - A CELEBRATION OF COLEMAN HAWKINS

Tenor saxophone master Coleman Hawkins (aka "Bean") is one of the most important figures in the stylistic and popular development of jazz. As part of their 110th birthday tribute to Hawkins, DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) presents pianist EricReed to perform on Thursday through Sunday, November 20th through 23rd. Reed brings an array of outstanding groups to honor his legacy. Reed's recorded and live output is a highly refined contribution to the tradition of swinging jazz; in addition to recording 20 albums as a leader, he has toured and recorded with Wynton Marsalis since the age of 18, is a former member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and has worked with luminaries such as Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dianne Reeves, and Christian McBride. Each night of Reed's residence at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola features different, but equally spectacular special guests, so you can't go wrong. There is a $35-$45 cover.
