NYC: JANE MONHEIT'S JAZZ PARTY AT BIRDLAND
Jane Monheit's Jazz Party returns to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sunday, November 16th at 6:00 pm. She is joined by with Michael Kanan, Neal Miner, Rick Montalbano. In just over fifteen years, critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Jane Monheit's honey-smooth vocals, silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned her two Grammy nominations and established her as one of her generation's most beloved and accomplished vocalists. Jane's sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds. Jane will debut her forthcoming project, "Hello Bluebird: Celebrating the Jazz of Judy Garland," in NYC during a weeklong engagement in January 2015. There is a $30 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: SEU JORGE AT THE BLUE NOTE
Brazilian singer-songwriter/ actor Seu Jorge performs at THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Monday through Sunday, November 10th through 16th (except Thursday the 13th) with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Seu became an international star after his performance as Knockout Ned in the Oscar-nominated City of God and his work in the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou in 2004. In the latter, heplayed a sailor who sang solo acoustic versions of David Bowie classics in Portuguese. Of course there has been a wealth of Seu Jorge original compositions as well. A kid from the favelas who taught himself to play guitar and several other instruments, Jorge is a singular talent of rare quality. His warm husky baritone is instantly recognizable but nonetheless flexible enough for samba, reggae, pop, electronic and other influences that find their way into his music. There is a $50-$75 cover.
NYC: ELLIS MARSALIS 80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT DIZZY'S
DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595)is honored to host Ellis Marsalis for his 80th Birthday celebration on Thursday through Sunday, November 13th through 16th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The NEA Jazz Master pianist brings his tried-and-true quartet of New Orleans-born master musicians, including Derek Douget, Jason Stewart, and Herlin Riley for a very special four-night run. A masterclass in straight-ahead jazz and bop, these sets are highly recommended for listeners of all experience levels, from those who have never set foot in a jazz club, to those who have been listening to Ellis for the last 60 years. Join us at the club for a festive celebration of a living legend and the patriarch of the most ubiquitous family in jazz. There is a $35-$45 cover.
