NYC: BENNY GOLSON QUARTET AT THE BLUE NOTE

Benny Golson Quartet will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, May 23rd through 25th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. Benny Golson is a talented composer/arranger whose tenor playing has continued to evolve with time. After attending Howard University (1947-1950) he worked in Philadelphia with Bull Moose Jackson's R&B band (1951) at a time when it included one of his writing influences, Tadd Dameron on piano. Golson played with Dameron for a period in 1953, followed by stints with Lionel Hampton (1953-1954), and Johnny Hodges and Earl Bostic (1954-1956). He came to prominence while with Dizzy Gillespie's globetrotting big band (1956-1958), as much for his writing as for his tenor playing (the latter was most influenced by Don Byas and Lucky Thompson). Golson wrote such standards as "I Remember Clifford" (for the late Clifford Brown), "Killer Joe," "Stablemates," "Whisper Not," "Along Came Betty," and "Blues March" during 1956-1960. His stay with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1958-1959) was significant, and during 1959-1962 he co-led the Jazztet with Art Farmer. From that point on Golson gradually drifted away from jazz and concentrated more on working in the studios and with orchestras including spending a couple of years in Europe (1964-1966). Golson has recorded consistently rewarding albums (many for Japanese labels) since that time including a reunion with Art Farmer and Curtis Fuller in a newJazztet. Through the years he has recorded as a leader for Contemporary, Riverside, United Artists, New Jazz, Argo, Mercury, and Dreyfus among others. There is a $25-$35 cover.

NYC: STEVE WILSON AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD

Acclaimed jazz saxophonist Steve Wilson will return THE VILLAGE VANGUARD (178 Seventh Avenue South, NYC - 212-255-4037) on Tuesday through Sunday, May 20th through 25th with shows at 8:30 & 10:30 pm. On the final two days of the visit (May 24th and 25th,) he will record a long-awaited live album, featuring his core band• 'Wilsonian's Grain' with Orrin Evans, Ugonna Okegwo and Bill Stewart. The uniqueness of Wilsonian's Grain is in the repertoire of Wilson originals, tunes from each member of the band, and the off-the-beaten-path tunes they play. Their interpretations of this repertoire, from this wonderfully disparate mixture of influences that each musician brings to the stage, are performed with absolute abandon and great sense of adventure. Steve plans to play and record material he's writing for the occasion, as well as "Well You Needn't (Monk), the tone poem "Santa Catarina" (Pascoal Hermeto), "Patterns" (Joe Chambers) and "If I Were a Wind of Spring," by the young composer Migiwa Miyajima. There is a $25-$30 cover plus a 1-drink minimum.

Ben Wolfe is a seasoned bassist-composer who has won critical praise for his eclectic work, which has ranged from a 25-minute suite for double quartet, to a short film soundtrack. Including his recent MAXJAZZ release "From Here I See," Wolfe has released seven CDs comprised solely of his original music. Early in his career, Wolfe formed a duo with Harry Connick, Jr., working together on numerous albums and world tours. He was then a part of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Diana Krall's touring band (he can be heard on her GRAMMY(r) Award-winning When I Look In Your Eyes), and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Wolfe will be joined at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola by a special guest: GRAMMY(r) Award-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton. There is a $35-$45 cover.
