Whether you've heard guitarist Dave Stryker fronting his own group (with 25 CD's as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why he is a favorite of the jazz writers. He was voted one of the Top Ten Guitarists in the 2001 Downbeat Readers poll, and a Rising Star for the last 5 years in the Downbeat Critics Poll. His approach combining the jazz burn to a soulful blues feeling is communicating to new fans wherever he plays. His most recent CD "Blue Strike" has made many Best of 2011 lists. TORONTO: THE MAUREEN KENNEDY QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
The Maureen Kennedy Quartet will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, May 29th through 31st at 9:00 pm. Known to the Canadian jazz community as a "singer's singer", vocalist Maureen Kennedy has cultivated an extensive repertoire of memorable standards and rediscovered gems that compliment her very personal sound. Kennedy developed her love for jazz in her early twenties when she studied for six years with Canadian flugelhorn and trumpet player Fred Stone. The purity of her sound and restrained use of vibrato developed under his tutelage. Through the years Ms. Kennedy has performed at numerous venues and arts events in and around the city of Toronto with many of Canada's accomplished jazz players. This past summer she went to Vancouver for the first time and sang two nights at the Cellar Jazz Club with a group that included Vancouver saxophonist Cory Weeds and guitarist Bill Coon, who will be joining her at Jazz Bistro to open and close this three-night stand. There is a $15-$20 cover.
WASHINGTON, DC: SHELEA AT BLUES ALLEY
Vocalist Shelea performs atBLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday, May 29th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Shelea has most recently released the video for her single "Love The Way You Love Me," a soulful ballad from her debut album Love Fell On Me, available now on Breath Of Life Records via CEN/RED Distribution, a division of Sony Music. Shelea's debut album encompasses a classic blend of soul, R&B, and jazz, and captures the true essence of romance. Love Fell On Me boasts production from the legendary Narada Michael Walden. Together they co-wrote and co-produced the up-tempo song "Have I Ever Told You." The album also features multi-platinum selling R&B singer, songwriter, producer Brian McKnight on "Can't Play It Cool" and the iconic Stevie Wonder on harmonica for the title track "Love Fell On Me," a song which was chosen as the musical theme for the film Jumping The Broom.
