BOSTON: NEW BLACK EAGLE JAZZ BAND AT THE REGATTABAR
The New Black Eagle Jazz Band will perform at THE REGATTABAR at the Charles Hotel (1 Bennett Street, Cambridge, MA - 617-395-7757 - ) on Friday, May 30th at 7:30 pm uplifting and soulful music of New Orleans. Formed in 1971, this seven-piece band has delighted audiences all over the world with their huge and eclectic repertoire of jazz from the 1920's and 30's. The group has a mature mastery of this great American music - from Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton to early Duke Ellington to Cole Porter; from blues to rags to popular songs of the era. The band has performed extensively all across North America, and has toured throughout Europe countless times. They have performed in New Orleans, London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Toronto to name a few. In 2011 they opened the Newport Jazz Festival to a packed house. They have been featured in concert with many jazz legends including Doc Cheatham, "Kid" Thomas, Benny Waters, Odetta and Milt Hinton, and with symphony orchestras - the Boston Pops, the Scottish National Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony to name a few. TORONTO: THE MAUREEN KENNEDY QUARTET AT THE JAZZ BISTRO
The Maureen Kennedy Quartet will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Thursday through Saturday, May 29th through 31st at 9:00 pm. Known to the Canadian jazz community as a "singer's singer", vocalist Maureen Kennedy has cultivated an extensive repertoire of memorable standards and rediscovered gems that compliment her very personal sound. Kennedy developed her love for jazz in her early twenties when she studied for six years with Canadian flugelhorn and trumpet player Fred Stone. The purity of her sound and restrained use of vibrato developed under his tutelage. Through the years Ms. Kennedy has performed at numerous venues and arts events in and around the city of Toronto with many of Canada's accomplished jazz players. This past summer she went to Vancouver for the first time and sang two nights at the Cellar Jazz Club with a group that included Vancouver saxophonist Cory Weeds and guitarist Bill Coon, who will be joining her at Jazz Bistro to open and close this three-night stand. WASHINGTON, DC: BLUES ALLEY PRESENTS PIECES OF A DREAM
Jazz trio Pieces of a Dream will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Friday through Sunday, May 30th through June 1st with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Pieces of a Dream emerged out of Philadelphia's music scene in 1976. Keyboardist James Lloyd, drummer Curtis Harmon and former bassist Cedric Napoleon, were (and still are) managed by the drummer's father and uncle, Danny and Bill Harmon, respectively. The group based their name on "Pieces of Dreams," a cover tune by Stanley Turrentine that the group performed. The youthful exuberance of those two Philly kids from the mid-'70s is still very much alive in Soul Intent, Pieces of a Dream's latest effort on Heads Up. It's that kind of innovation and eclecticism that keeps Pieces of a Dream fresh and authentic in a jazz world that's ever-changing. Call for cover/minimum information.
WASHINGTON, DC: JIMMY GREENE AT THE BOHEMIAN CAVERNS
A native of Hartford, CT, saxophonist, composer, and educator Jimmy Greene will perform at BOHEMIAN CAVERNS (2001 Eleventh Street N.W., Washington, DC - 202-299-0800 - ) on Friday & Saturday, May 30th & 31st at 7:30 pm. Jimmy Green has emerged as a positive presence in the jazz world. His 9 solo recordings, Live at Smalls (SmallsLive), Mission Statement (RazDaz/Sunnyside), The Overcomers Suite (NuJazz), Gifts and Givers (Criss Cross), True Life Stories (Criss Cross), Forever (Criss Cross), Brand New World (RCA Victor), Live at Birdland (RCA Victor) and Introducing Jimmy Greene (Criss Cross) have been met with much critical acclaim. In addition to his recordings and appearances as a leader, Greene appears on over 70 albums as a sideman, and has toured and/or recorded with Horace Silver, Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard, Harry Connick, Jr., Avishai Cohen, Kenny Barron, Lewis Nash, Steve Turre, the New Jazz Composers Octet and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, among many others.
