CHICAGO: SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY ... THE MUSIC OF DORIS DAY
Chicago cabaret favorite Laura Freeman hosts a celebration of Doris' music to commemorate Day's 90th birthday in April at THE SKOKIE THEATRE (7924 Lincoln Avenue, Skokie, IL - 847-677-7761) on Thursday, May 29th at 8:00 pm. Laura is a regular performer at Metropolis Theatre, the Chicago Humanities Festival, Davenport's, Drury Lane Water Tower, and the Chicago Cultural Center. She will be accompanied by Beckie Menzie at the piano. The show 'Sentimental Journey ... the music of Doris Day' will sample selections from the over 600 songs Miss Day recorded including such hits as Sentimental Journey, Secret Love, and Everybody Loves a Lover. She was not just a pretty face and a pratfall. She represents the spirit of us all, at various times in history: the voice of the returning service men of WWII, the early women's lib movement as a single career woman, and the voice of the grieving gay community at the height of the AIDS crisis. Her rendition of My Buddy, sung for her friend Rock Hudson, was used to say goodbye to sons, brothers and lovers in the early '80s. Call for cover/minimum information.
SAN DIEGO: ROBYN SPANGLER AT MARTINI'S ABOVE FOURTH
Robyn Spangler brings her show "Why I Love Linda Ronstadt" to MARTINI'S ABOVE FOURTH (3940 4th Avenue, San Diego, CA - 619-400-4500) on Thursday, May 29th at 8:00 pm. Linda Ronstadt is best known as the queen of the "rock ballad" with her string of hits in the late 60's and early 70's but that's just the beginning of a four plus decade career in music that includes almost every genre. Those who have heard Robyn sing know that crossing genres is what drew her to showcase Ronstadt's career. With Musical Director (and San Diego favorite) Todd Schroeder at the piano. There is a $20 cover plus a $15 food/drink minimum.

LOS ANGELES: CLARA BELLINO AT THE GARDENIA
Clara Bellino will perform at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Thursday, May 29th at 9:00 pm. Born in Paris and growing up in a small village in the French Alps, Clara studied piano and guitar in conservatory there, but at age 17 moved to California. She has since played bass in a reggae band, starred as a singer in the 1993 feature film, Steal America, worked in many more films and commercials, has done extensive voiceover work, and released her first CD, Flying Monkey. She has written many songs herself, including six that were included in her second CD, Embarcadero Love, but she is justifiably particularly proud of her latest CD, This is Happiness - Hand in Hand, which features not only her own "This is Happiness," but also a duet with the late, then 87-year old, Bobby Sharp (who penned the classic "Unchain My Heart,") of "Hand in Hand," a ballad which he wrote in 1947 but which lay fallow, unrecorded and undiscovered, until the release of this CD. Call for cover/minimum information.
