NYC: TONIA TECCE MAKES HER LONG-DELAYED NYC CABARET DEBUT
Singer Tonia Tecce, who has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Philadelphia's Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Academy of Music and sung with Peter Nero and many orchestra, will make her New York City cabaret debut atTHE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with a three-night engagement. Performances are on Wednesday, September 11th at 7:00 pm; Sunday, September 15th 7:00 pm; and Thursday, September 26th at 9:30 pm. Her show, A COCKEYED OPTIMIST: Why We Believe, The Songs of Richard Rodgers, has been written and directed by Michael Bush who has recently directed the Off-Broadway productions of PSYCHO THERAPY, CACTUS FLOWER and BASED ON A TOTALLY TRUE STORY. Music Director Tom Lawton is a performer, recording artist, composer and teacher. Ms Tecce, who is in her mid-70s, began singing in her home town of Paulsboro, NJ at age 8. She studied music and voice and performed extensively and was headed for a music career when love intervened. One week after singing at her graduation from Rosemont College, she married Frederick Tecce and devoted the next twenty-five years to raising their six children. She now has 12 grandchildren! There is a $25 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
NYC: MARY FOSTER CONKLIN - "LIFE IS A BITCH" - SONGS BY FRAN LANDESMAN
Mary Foster Conklin returns to THE METROPOLITAN ROOM (34 West 22nd Street, NYC - 212-206-0440) with her acclaimed show LIFE IS A BITCH, a collection of songs by Fran Landesman. Performances are scheduled for Thursday, September 26th at 7:00 pm; Friday & Saturday, October 27th & 28th at 9:30 pm; and Wednesday, October 9th at 9:30 pm. She is joined on stage by John diMartino - piano, Ed Howard / Marco Panascia - bass, and special vocal guest John diPinto. Landesman, the self-proclaimed "poet laureate of lovers and losers," is best remembered as the lyricist of The Nervous Set, the world's first (and only) beatnik musical, which premiered in St. Louis in 1959 and later flopped on Broadway. Two numbers from the show, "All the Sad Young Men" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" were widely recorded and became jazz standards. The evening will consist of a musical assortment of Landesman collaborators, including Tommy Wolf, Alec Wilder, Bob Dorough, Roy Kral, Simon Wallace and John Simon, with a special nod to past singers who were champions of Fran's songs, like Jackie and Roy and Suzannah McCorkle. There is a $20 cover plus a 2-drink minimum.
