NYC: MIDTOWN JAZZ AT MIDDAY: SONGS OF HARRY WARREN
MIDTOWN JAZZ AT MIDDAY continues at ST. PETER'S CHURCH - SANCTUARY (619 Lexington Avenue, NYC - 212-935-2200 - ) every Wednesday. Midday Jazz Midtown is an ongoing jazz program for the midtown community. Concerts take place in the Sanctuary of Saint Peter's Church and are presented by Midtown Arts Common in cooperation with Saint Peter's Church. Ronny Whyte is the producer. The show on Wednesday, October 22nd features the Jay Clayton, vocal; and John DiMartino, piano. performing The Songs of Harry Warren. Performances are at 1:00 pm, $10 donation.
NYC: THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG CENTENNIAL BAND
The Louis Armstrong Centennial Band aka David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band performs at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band (also known as the Louis Armstrong Centennial Band) breathes life and passion into America's own great art form. Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/ vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more! There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: KENNY BARRON & DAVE HOLLAND AT BIRDLAND
Kenny Barron & Dave Holland will perform at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday through Saturday, October 21st through 25th with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. Over the course of a nearly five-decade career, bassist/composer Dave Holland has exemplified that evolutionary process in musical form, reinventing his concept and approach with each new project while constantly honing his instantly identifiable voice. He is currently an artist in residence at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Miami. Dave Holland is an English jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader who has been performing and recording for five decades. He has lived in the United States for over 40 years. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: THE DIZZY GILLESPIE ALL-STARS AT THE BLUE NOTE
The Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars return to THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Tuesday through Sunday, October 21st through 26th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. History has produced its share of great artists and great people - John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie was both. As a performer, he left behind an incredible record of innovation and inspiration; as a composer, a broad repository of musical masterpieces; and as a man, a legion of friends, colleagues, and compatriots who remember him with the same degree of love and esteem they reserve for his work. The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and smaller Alumni All-Star group are the direct descendants of Gillespie's musical ventures. The groups have featured some of Dizzy's closest compatriots: senior statesman and NEA Jazz Master James Moody; musical director John Lee; and veteran Gillespie alumni Roy Hargrove, Roberta Gambarini, Cyrus Chestnut, Steve Davis, and Willie Jones III. All of them are outstanding band leaders, educators, and recording artists in their own right. There is a $20-$35 cover.
NYC: GORDON AU'S GRAND ST. STOMPERS AT DIZZY'S
Gordon Au's Grand St. Stompers will perform at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595 - ) on Wednesday, October 22nd with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. Monk Institute alumnus and trumpeter Gordon Au leads this New York-based, New Orleans-style hot jazz band featuring Gordon Au, trumpet; Tamar Korn and Molly Ryan, vocals; Dennis Lichtman, clarinet; Josh Holcomb, trombone; Nick Russo, guitar/banjo; Andrew Hall, bass; and Rob Garcia, drums. The Stompers are loved not only for their authentic performances of vintage jazz tunes dating back to the 1920s, but also for their jazzy versions of classical, Disney, TV, film, and even pop music, as well as their own exciting originals.
