WASHINGTON, DC: MONIFAH AT BLUES ALLEY

R&B diva Monifah will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Thursday, October 23rd with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Monifah grew up in Spanish Harlem in the midst of a musical family, who encouraged her to work in several musicals while at an early age. With the experience she gained singing, Monifah signed a contract with MCA and released her self-titled album in 1995. The following year, her single "I Miss You (Come Back Home)" became an R&B hit. Her second album, Moods ... Moments, was released on MCA's Uptown subsidiary in May 1996. The Top Ten single "Touch It" made 1998's Mo'hogany her biggest album hit, and two years later she followed with Home. There is a $32.30 cover.

BETHESDA, MD: LISA ENGELKEN & THE MONSTER QUINTET

Lisa Engelken & the Monster Quintet present the East Coast Debut of Little Warrior at BETHESDA BLUES & JAZZ SUPPER CLUB (7719 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD - 240-330-4500) on Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:30 pm. Lisa Engelken is a fearless singer with a daunting stage presence. Classically & theatrically trained, this Kansas-born straight shooter wields an acrobatic three-octave range that alternately locomotes and floats through tunes. Lisa electrifies audiences with an intensity that has garnered her comparisons to Evel Kneivel, Janis Joplin & even a roaring Harley Davidson. Expect the unexpected as Lisa returns to DC with her Monster Quintet to debut Little Warrior (Top 10 Jazz Releases of 2013): an arresting collection of originals & re-imaginings of The Cars, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln and Wayne Shorter. Engelken now lives in San Francisco and has shared the stage with Tom Waits, John Cameron Mitchell, T-Bone Burnett and Yo la tengo. There is a $20 cover.
