Now in its 12th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city's best musical bargain! NYC: DAVE LIEBMAN BIG BAND AT BIRDLAND

The Dave Liebman Big Band celebrates the release of "A Tribute to Wayne Shorter" at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Tuesday & Wednesday, September 30th & October 1st with shows at 8:30 & 11:00 pm. The New York-based David Liebman Big Band (DLBB) under the direction of saxophonist Gunnar Mossblad is made up of some of New York's most experienced and creative jazz musicians - performers who are recording artists in their own right. The DLBB features original compositions by Liebman, covering his various periods of his forty-plus year career. The arrangements by such well known artists such as Vince Mendoza and Jim McNeely feature Lieb out front on soprano sax. Both the first recording Beyond the Line (Omnitone) and the followup Live: As Always (Mama Records) have received critical acclaim. What makes the music interesting beyond the stellar performances is that each arrangment is by a different musician, setting the stage for interesting contrasts between selections, all reflecting the grand scale of Lieb's eclectic tastes and skills. The DLBB breaks the bonds of traditional big-band sounds. There is a $40 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

A tirelessly creative spirit, Chick continues to forge ahead, continually reinventing himself in the process. There is a $45-$65 cover.

NYC: DAVID CHESKY: JAZZ IN THE NEW HARMONIC AT DIZZY'S

David Chesky presents Jazz In The New Harmonic at DIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Wednesday, October 1st with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. With Jazz in the New Harmonic, David Chesky and his band of all-star jazz musicians fuse 21st century classical harmonies with the city's rhythms to create a new genre of jazz. The album, featuring the same band set to appear at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, received numerous awards for its provocative and cerebral approach to the classical/jazz blend. Chesky's patient, angular harmonies are elevated by a solid groove in the group's foundation, relying on heavy bass vamps from Peter Washington and a steady pulse from drummer Billy Drummond. If you're looking for something new and refreshing, or a jazz set with cross-genre appeal, join them for this memorable one-night-only performance. There is a $35 cover.
