LOS ANGELES: CLAUDIA KOVAL AT THE GARDENIA
Singer/ pianist Claudia Koval will perform at THE GARDENIA (7066 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA - 323-467-7444) on Wednesday, October 1st at 9:00 pm. Trained in classical piano at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music and in classical voice at the University of Victoria Music Conservatory, Ms. Koval took a detour into jazz through performing in Victoria jazz clubs, pursuing jazz vocal studies in Edmonton, and singing with well-known Canadian jazz artists. She moved to Los Angeles to further her jazz studies at the Dick Grove School of Music, writing and conducting a composition for 40-piece orchestra while there. Taking another career detour, she subsequently earned an MBA, but retired from her work as a business manager in Century City two years ago. Coming full circle, she has most recently entertained at private concerts and at various public venues throughout the Southland, and she continues to broaden her repertoire by including R & B and even a touch of rock/blues - but always with a sense of intimacy and fun. Call for cover/minimum information.
SAN FRANCISCO: CAROLYN WONDERLAND AT YOSHI'S
Carolyn Wonderland will perform at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600) on Wednesday, October 1st at 8:00 pm. Once you witness the raw emotional power and originality of Carolyn's vocals and guitar playing, you are left wondering how it is that she is so much more musically convincing. Is it geography or musical lineage or life experience or what? Whatever it is, there is no doubt she serves up a generous helping on her new album Peace Meal (Bismeaux). Produced by a stellar cast of Grammy Award winners, including long-time supporter and inspiration Ray Benson (who produced Carolyn's 2008 breakthrough album Miss Understood), Carolyn jumped at the chance to also work with Larry Campbell (the force behind The Band drummer Levon Helm's recent comeback) on four of the album tracks. Finally, founding Monkee Michael Nesmith produced a track as well. The album was recorded at Benson's Bismeaux Studios in Austin and also at Helm's studio in Woodstock, NY. There is a $25 cover.
SAN FRANCISCO: CASEY BREVES - "CASEY BREVES: BACK IN TOWN!"
Casey Breves brings his show "Casey Breves: Back In Town!" to FEINSTEIN'S AT THE NIKKO (222 Mason Street, San Francisco, CA - 866-663-1063) on Wednesday, October 1st at 8:00 pm as part of the club's "City Singers" series. Casey Breves has performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia as both a classical and pop vocalist. A NYC native, he toured for three seasons with the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer. He was a featured soloist in the world premiere of the oratorio A Melancholy Beauty at the Kennedy Center and Avery Fisher Hall, starred in The Fall of the House of Usher at the NYC Fringe Festival, sang the title role in Monteverdi's Orfeo at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and appeared as the principal soloist in Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah with the Symphony Silicon Valley. He currently lives in New York City, where he is writing, recording, and performing regularly - most recently in a featured solo spot as the voice of Andrea Bocelli on Saturday Night Live in the sketch "Christmas Album".
