PALM SPRINGS: CHARLES HERRERA IN "BY REQUEST"

Charles Herrera, one of Palm Springs most popular singers will perform his new show, "By Request" at THE ARTHUR NEWMAN THEATRE at the JOSLYN CENTER (73-750 Catalina Way, Palm Desert, CA - TKTS: 760-325-2731 ) on Sunday, September 28th at 2:00 pm. Musical director is Tim Bruneau with Teresa Di Pietro on cello. The show is part of Les Michael's Sundays in the Summer Series. Known for his smooth voice and outgoing charm, Charles is a desert favorite and is regularly featured in productions, benefits, and shows throughout the desert. Charles was born and raised in the heart of the wine-growing Napa Valley. With training in opera, he is equally comfortable singing in musical styles from Opera, Country, Pop, Broadway, Jazz, and Standards from the Great American Songbook. His acting studies with teacher Stella Adler came in very handy with his performances in musicals and plays including Godspell, Oklahoma, The Mikado, The Glass Menagerie, and Harvey, and he's been nominated twice for Desert Theatre League awards for Best Lead Performer in Marry Me a Little, and Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays. A seasoned cabaret singer, his performances have garnered him critical-acclaim and earned him fans in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Mexico - where he is in high demand for dubbing the singing in Spanish for US animated features. BIRD'S NEST JAZZ at WATERPARK LOFTS (2875 Glascock Street #109, Oakland, CA - 510-534-6163 ) presents jazz in an intimate setting the last Sunday of the month from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Seating is first come, first served. On Sunday, September 28th, the club will present Vocalist Roseanna Vitro &• Pianist Mark Soskin In celebration of her newest CD "Clarity, Music Of Clare Fischer". Versatility is one of Vitro's key trademarks as shown by her three acclaimed, special project albums. Imaginative and deeply thought out, they're homage to such diverse artists as Randy Newman; Ray Charles on "Catchin' some Rays" and Bill Evanson "Conviction: Thought of Bill Evans." $26 suggested donation includes food & beverage. OAKLAND, CA: THE MIKE ROSE/KELLY PARK BIG BAND AT THE SOUND ROOM

The Mike Rose/Kelly Park Big Band will perform on the last Sunday of every month at 5:00 pm at THE SOUND ROOM(2147 Broadway, Oakland, CA - 415-994-3501 ). The band is a seventeen piece Jazz Orchestra that truly takes joy in performing big band music of the past and present. This exciting ensemble plays some of the classic big band repertoire as well as original arrangements and compositions by members of the group. The band is comprised of veteran Bay Area musicians with an extensive history of playing, touring, and recording with some of the world's top acts including; Barry Manilow, Pete and Sheila Escovedo, Thad Jones, Kenny G, Stan Kenton Band, Eddie Money, The Shirelles, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Huey Lewis, and many more. SAN FRANCISCO: LAURIE ANTONIOLI - THE MUSIC OF JONI MITCHELL

Fearless Bay Area vocalist Laurie Antonioli performs with The American Dreams Band for her show The Music of Joni Mitchell at YOSHI'S (1330 Fillmore Street, San Francisco, CA - 415-655-5600 ) on Sunday, September 28th at 7:00 pm. Laurier has never shied away from plunging into jazz's deepest pools. She's raced through bebop steeplechases with cult saxophonist Pony Poindexter, collaborated with Bobby McFerrin during his formative San Francisco years, performed and collaborated with tenor sax legend Joe Henderson, and recorded a breathtaking duo album with pianist Richie Beirach, just for starters. With her latest project, Songs of Shadow, Songs of Light, Antonioli plumbs new emotional depths exploring her earliest musical inspiration, the vividly confessional songs of Joni Mitchell. An internationally acclaimed jazz singer and influential educator, Antonioli doesn't just interpret Mitchell's music, she unveils unexpected emotional insights and uncovers submerged musical ideas while turning each song into her own revelatory tale. There is a $20 cover.
