NYC: JANE MONHEIT'S JAZZ PARTY AT BIRDLAND
Jane Monheit's Jazz Party, with Michael Kanan, Neal Miner, Rick Montalbano will be held at BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays, at 6:00 pm. In just over fifteen years, critically acclaimed jazz vocalist Jane Monheit's honey-smooth vocals, silky phrasing and natural knack for storytelling have earned her two Grammy nominations and established her as one of her generation's most beloved and accomplished vocalists. Jane's sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds. Jane will debut her forthcoming project, "Hello Bluebird: Celebrating the Jazz of Judy Garland," in NYC during a weeklong engagement in January 2015. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS
Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.
NYC: KENNY WERNER: COALITION AT THE BLUE NOTE
Kenny Werner, a world-class pianist and composer, will perform at THE BLUE NOTE(131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) on Friday through Sunday, September 26th through 28th with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. His prolific output of compositions, recordings, and publications continue to impact audiences around the world. Born in Brooklyn in 1951 and growing up on Long Island, Werner began playing and performing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. He formed his own trio in 1981 with drummer Tom Rainey and bassist Ratzo Harris. The trio matured for 14 years, wowing audiences in America and Europe and recording four albums along the way. For several years now, Werner has toured and recorded in a quintet format, releasing Balloons: Live at the Blue Note on Half Note Records just last year. Tonight, he returns to the Blue Note stage in this format, performing with an all-star quintet featuring guitarist Lionel Loueke and saxophonist Miguel Zenon. There is a $20-$35 cover.
