N.Y. STATE: BROADWAY COMES TO BLOOMING GROVE SERIES
Broadway Concerts Direct presents the next show in their Broadway Comes to Blooming Grove Series, Voices of Spring - May Song Madness, at BLOOMING GROVE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST (2 Old Dominion Road, Blooming Grove, NY - 410-908-1302) on Saturday, May 10th at 6:00 pm. Performers include Carole Demas, Rich Flanders, Rob Gardner. Joanna Morton Gary. Mark Planner, Sarah Rice, Anne Tarpey-Flanders and David Vernon with Eric Sedgwick, Piano and Sarah Rice, Theremin. The evening will feature an eclectic evening of song, about spring and ... just about everything, drawing from the world of cabaret, classical, theater and popular. Featuring songs from CAMELOT, and more with maybe a little Strauss, Verdi and Irving Berlin thrown in for good measure. Songs performed by some of the most exquisite and riveting voices and singing actors on the Broadway, music theatre, cabaret and operatic stages today. There is a $20 cover.
BOSTON: RAMSEY LEWIS AT SCULLERS
Legendary jazz artist Ramsey Lewis will appear atSCULLERS JAZZ CLUB(400 Soldiers Field Road, Allston, MA - 617-562-4111) on Friday & Saturday, May 9th & 10th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Nearly a hundred years old, jazz is now a deep musical tradition. No one understands that better than Ramsey Lewis, a pioneer in this musical form since the 1950s. Lewis scored major chart hits with funky interpretations of pop songs from "Hang on Sloopy" and "The In Crowd"; he went notoriously electric in the 1970s by collaborating with Earth, Wind, & Fire; and he's collected a shelfful of gold records and Grammys. His passions range from Chopin to Duke Ellington, from gospel to Charlie Parker. Dinner/Show: $85 Show only: $45.
TORONTO: JAZZ BISTRO'S YOUNG ARTIST SERIES: PATRICK HEWAN
Rising star in the Toronto Jazz scene, Patrick Hewan, will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Friday & Saturday, May 9th & 10th at 6:00 pm as part of the club's Young Artist series. Patrick's energetic virtuosic playing captivates and moves his audiences. He draws on the vast vocabulary of the legendary jazz pianists who came before him and adds his own spirit and passion to create a unique sound and style. Drawing heavily on influences such as: Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Hiromi Uehara, Oscar Peterson, and Phineas Newborn while studying under the tutelage of legendary pianists such as Mark Eisenman, Brian Dickesnon, Richard Whiteman, Robi Botos, and Hilario Duran it's no secret where Patrick developed his unique, high-octane style that still clearly adheres to the art forms tradition. Patrick began studying classical piano at the age of four and was later introduced to the saxophone where he developed a great love for jazz music. His education includes York University and Humber College and he is a recipient of the Berklee World Tour Scholarship for both sax and piano. No cover charge.
TORONTO: DAVE YOUNG & MICHAEL DUNSTON TRIBUTE TO DONNY HATHAWAY
The Juno Award winning Canadian Jazz bassist Dave Young and vocal stylist Michael Dunston will perform at THE JAZZ BISTRO (251 Victoria Street, Toronto, ONT, CA - 416-363-5299) on Friday & Saturday, May 9th & 10th at 9:00 pm. Together they will pay tribute to the many compositions of Donny Hathaway - an extremely talented R&B and Gospel singer/songwriter of the 60s and 70s. They are joined on stage by Kevin Turcotte - trumpet, Perry White - tenor sax, Reg Schwager - guitar, Bernie Senensky - piano and Mark Kelso - drums. Dave has performed and recorded with many of the world's finest jazz musicians, including Oscar Peterson, Cedar Walton, Tommy Flanagan, Ellis Marsalis, Cyrus Chestnut, and Oliver Jones sings classic favourites with a powerfully earthy sound which will move any audience. There is a $20 cover.
WASHINGTON D.C.: THE AZAR LAWRENCE QUINTET AT BLUES ALLEY
The Azar Lawrence Quintet will perform at BLUES ALLEY (1073 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC - 202-337-4141) on Friday & Saturday, May 9th & 10th with shows at 8:00 & 10:00 pm. Saxophonist, Azar Lawrence's musical studies began at age five. A classically trained violinist and pianist his formal instruction were under the direction of his late mother, music teacher and educator, Ima Lawrence. Born in 1952 at home on Los Angeles' famed Central Avenue, the vibe of that scene clearly seeped into his musical consciousness. While performing for years with Elvin Jones he headed up Fantasy/Prestidge Records, and several years he a member of McCoy's Quartet, during the (Enlightenment period) and also at that time he began doing studio work for Capitol Records as a songwriter. He is joined by Eddie Henderson, Benito Gonzalez, Essiet Essiet & Brandon Lewis. Call for cover/minimum information.
