NYC: THE BIRDLAND JAZZ PARTY FEATURING HILARY GARDNER

The Birdland Jazz Party features Hilary Gardner on Sunday, May 4th at 6:00 pm atBIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080). Birdland's very own jazz quartet hits the stage every Sunday to wrap up the weekend with jazz classics and a special guest vocalist. This quartet features John Hart (Guitar), Paul Gil (bass), Carmen Intorre (Drums) & Jon Davis (Piano). Acclaimed singer Hilary Gardner grew up in Wasilla, Alaska infatuated with New York City. The city came to life through the jazz and American songbook albums in her parents' record collection. Visions gleaned from those classic vinyl platters epitomized reinvention and feverish creativity, and inspired Hilary to make New York City her home. In 2010, Hilary went from waiting tables to making her Broadway debut in two-time Tony-award winner Twyla Tharp's hit musical, Come Fly Away. Backed by a 19-piece big band, Hilary sang solos and duets with Frank Sinatra in a performance hailed by critics. There is a $25 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum. NYC: ARTURO O'FARRILL AFRO LATIN JAZZ ORCHESTRA SUNDAYS

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to BIRDLAND (315 West 44th Street, NYC - 212-581-3080) on Sundays at 9:00 & 11:00pm. Called the leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz", O'Farrill was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte. The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra is the resident large format ensemble of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) founded by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 and dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin jazz, supporting its performance for new audiences, and educating young people in the understanding and performance of this important cultural treasure. There is a $30 cover plus a $10 food/drink minimum.

NYC: DOUBLE FEATURE: OMAR SOSA QUARTETO AFRO-CUBANO AND THE MELISSA ALDANA QUARTET

On Thursday through Sunday, May 1st through 4th, THE BLUE NOTE (131 West 3rd Street, NYC - 212-475-8592) will present a double-feature how featuring The Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano and The Melissa Aldana Quartet , with shows at 8:00 & 10:30 pm. The Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano features Omar Sosa (Cuba), piano; Ernesto Simpson (Cuba). drums; Childo Tomas (Mozambique), elec. bass; and Leandro Saint-Hill (Cuba), alto sax & flute. Annually performing upwards of 100 concerts on six continents, Sosa has appeared in venues as diverse as the Blue Note, Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and numerous notable jazz festivals across the globe. He's garnered several Grammy nominations and has released a string of well-regarded solo albums in the last decade. The Melissa Aldana Quartet features Melissa Aldana, sax; Glenn Zaleski, piano; Pablo Menares, bass; Jochen Rueckert, drums. Melissa Aldana recently won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz saxophone competition where this year's panel of judges included saxophonists Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Branford Marsalis and Jane Ira Bloom. She was the first female instrumentalist to take first prize in this event since its inception in 1987. There is a $20-$35 cover.

NYC: FAIRVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH BRASS BAND AT DIZZY'S

The Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band will perform atDIZZY'S CLUB AT JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER (33 West 60th Street, NYC - 212-258-9595) on Friday through Sunday, May 2nd through 4th with shows at 7:30 & 9:30 pm. The Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band was organized in 1970 by banjoist and guitarist Danny Barker, who returned to New Orleans after performing extensively with jazz legends such as Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Cab Calloway, and Charlie Parker. Illustrious alumni of the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band include Wynton Marsalis, Leroy Jones, Branford Marsalis, Herlin Riley, and Dr. Michael White. The band performing at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, comprising Kevin Louis (trumpet), David Harris (trombone), Darryl Adams (saxophone), Jeffrey Hills (tuba), and Terrence Andrews (bass drum), will be joined by another alumnus, legendary drummer and "The King of Treme," Shannon Powell. There is a $40-$45 cover.
